Sounds like ADHD...Attention Deficiate Hyper Disorder. He could be having reactions to the things in the foods that he eats. I have a cousin whose son is ADHD and is not allowed anything sugery foods or drinks. He has a reaction to red dye in foods and drinks. Maybe try doing some research about it on the internet.... I've learned a lot about ADD because my daughter has it. But she is not hyper.

"Too much energy" is not necessarily a symptom of ADD or ADHD. Things to look for are impulse control issues like the inability to control emotional responses (good or bad), fidgeting and lack of focus on school work. I have 2 ADHD boys, one is hyperactive and the other is inattentive. The inattentive one is very quiet and calm, but he cannot focus when it comes to school work. He just zones off into space. The hyperactive one is all go, no quit, constant movement no matter what, but he will actually slow down a bit to do school work. Sounds weird, I know. They both take Ritalin, and have greatly improved. I would suggest talking to your pediatrician to see if s/he thinks your son should be referred to a specialist for further testing.

My son has ADHD, and his primary symptom is a lack of impulse control. Where most of us have a "switch" in our brains that tells us that we can't smack someone who makes us mad, children with poor impulse control just smack first. They are truly remorseful afterward, and honestly can't explain why they did it, since they do understand that it's wrong.

The caffeine thing that another person responded about is a fallacy. There is a mechanism in the brain that is triggered by the amphetamine in ADHD medications, but it is NOT caffeine.

I also used to agree with the respondent who said that ADHD comes from bad parenting. But I'm a great mom and have a loving, structured home with consistent discipline - and a son with ADHD.

It's a neurological thing, and it is REAL. I'm not saying it's not over-diagnosed and that some children aren't overmedicated, but for those children who do suffer from it, medication can be a lifesaver.

Good luck to you.

Our son has ADHD and is full of energy from morning till night. Just cause a kid is active doesn't mean that he has ADHD, it's the inability to tend to task, meaning they can't stay focus enough to complete what you ask them to do. But food allergies can give kids the wriggles and a bad attitude. My girlfriend said that she was going to have her daughter tested, and when I said have you thought of food allergies (and by the way, I've read to suspect the foods that your child loves to eat, especially red dye #5 or wheat or nut products). Come to find out, red dye makes her child completely uncontrollable and crabby. Hope this helps, looking for other causes is a big pain but definately worth it.

have a chat with his teacher - if he is hyperactive then she will have noted some concerns too

hyperactive children often can go on and on till gone midnight - my son isn't hyperactive but there are some nights when he is still awake at 10pm despite being put to bed at a regular time of around 8pm.

I am sure you have a routine to try and help him settle down at bedtime - how about involving him in energetic activities after school sports or swimming or something to try and dull down some of that energy?

Sounds like a typical 8 year old if you ask me. Kids with ADD usually have school issues and relationship issues. It can only be diagnosed with a series of tests from a trained individual. ADD and ADHD are highly over diagnosed.

One of the biggest symptoms of A.D.D. is an inability to concentrate. Most of the time you will see problems with school work/behavior. There are websites you can check out.

really easy test for ADHD is to give the child something with caffene!
children with ADHD will calm down when given stimulents (thats why ridelin works)
so if coffee or mountain dew put him to sleep suspect he is ADHD, but if they make him more hyper he is just a normal active child :)
good luck

the biggest symptom is broken families or non caring parents...
A.D.D. has been thrown way out of proportion and used as an excuse for lack of dicipline (with Harmony)...
doctors have capatilized on it and employment through research has also...
symptoms????

I totally disagree with jstr12001 on a professional level - simply because I work with children with ADD and ADHD as well.
