yes, think of how the world has changed in the past century and imagine how it will be after a few centuries.

Creating a robot to do a particular job all itself is not difficult. But the difficulty comes when it needs to do the job which should be easily interpreted by human. Because we won't think in same way at all the time. So the robots to the mars lender which were sent to get data as liked by scientists and the bomb diffusers which handle the bombs kept by terrorists are made to have human control over it.

Creating a robot which does all the mathematical, logical and philosophical thinking like human for all the situations is not possible. For that to be done they have to make artificial brain which exactly reflects the functioning of human brain. We don't even know 5% of how human brain works then whets the point of simulating it such that it works the same way we do in all the situations.

No.5 is alive...

look no further than the roomba. We've already got them. They do the job they were designed for and you don't have to even think about it. The current industry's "artificial intelligence" really comes down to the level of complexity of the robot's task. The industry is making these tasks more and more complex along a projectable development rate, so depending on the task(s) you have in mind, yes. one day they will be what you would think of as "full A.I."

The real question is, why would we ever build a robot that doesn't take instructions from us? "We want you to go to mars... and do what ever you like, just make sure it justifies our budget." Even humans require some level of control from other humans, though we usually get commands through email as opposed to joysticks.

not likely due to the moral dilema and the public perception of AI. its a pity though, creating an AI robot of limited capability would still be awesome. imagine having servant robots that cook and clean for you.
