I am currently employed as a civillian member of staff working in the UK for Police Service.
Have recently passed all the recruitment proceedue to become a Police Constable and passed all the assessments.
I've since been told that, as the result of an incident that occurred 4 years ago (it was a public disturbance which I was present at but not involved in any criminal activity), my application has been put on hold.
I have no criminal convictions nor have I associated with the people who were present at the incident for 4 years.
Although I am civillian staff (been in post 15 months), I am 'front-line' and deal with members of public.
I was first made aware of this problem two months ago, but nothing further has happened. each time I have spoken to the recruitment department they are avasive. Surely, if there's something in my past that would affect employment as P.C, then that should directly affect my 'front-line' position as civillian staff? Has any one had similar experiences?

If I really wanted the job and knew everything I could find out about where I stand, I would stand up and fight to get it. Here In the U.S. You can take that kind of thing to a higher court and get things cleared up. I would talk to a lawyer first and go from there! good luck

I have known for some time that after I install the new IT systems where I currently work (3+ years) that support will be outsourced and that I will no longer have a position. I totally understand the situation and dont have a problem as there are now far less people for me to support and would benefit from moving on. However my employer has never given me a date for leaving and was left at, that after the support contract was signed I would have nothing to do. Having spoken to my employer today, it was obvious that they were trying to have me leave without giving me a redundancy notice. I was told that it would look better at interviews that I had left to move on to something more challenging rather than saying that I was made redundant. I told my employer that I thought and was expecting things to be done above board and that I would be given notice. The whole conversation smelt fishy, I couldn't quite pin point it, if I get redundant, I'll only get a couple of weeks pay, if I give my notice, I dont.

I would appriciate others views on this, would it be better to give my notice as suggested so I can say to potential employers, I left to seek a more challenging role or have a redundancy notice and say to potential employers that I was made redundant? Does it really make a difference or am I potentially being diddled out of something here? Its not like I hate my job and need to quit....

In the position that you currently hold, your record can not be held against you because you do not state using or having to be in possession of a weapon.

Whereas the other position that you are in, you would have to be in a position to carry a weapon and be in possession of one. Which, even though it was by association, your background elimates you at this time for that posititon.

But, from someone who has been in your shoes with a very similar story...they could be observing you to monitor your actions, watching your private life to create an evaluation of your behavior. Whatever you do, I would be very careful to watch your actions for the next year, because you might just get the job you want, but if you go out there and screw up, then you won't.

Keep yourself clean and everything else should be fine.
