In my opinion, to enlighten and broaden your mind in understanding the other persons beliefs.....however, that doesn't always turn out that way. Seeing different ways that a culture or person thinks, the reason why they do or say certain things.

I really like C.S. Lewis' explanation of that one. Ok, I can't find the book, so I can't tell you (yet) from which one it came. I will look more later after work (I'm already running late). But briefly summed up, C.S. Lewis compared it to the Atlantic Ocean and a map of the ocean. Experiencing it first-hand is the only way to go, but if you ever really want to navigate it and see other parts of it you need a map in order not to get lost. God is our experience, and theology is the map to experiencing him better and more fully.

Sorry for such a short answer; I will add more later today!!

The purpose of theology is to make us better readers of scripture.

They say that the longer you are in school, the more you learn about how much you do not know. Theology exists to communicate the truths of God to real people living real lives.

The purpose of theology is to interpret Scripture and to explicate the Gospel to humankind. Of course it is not merely a discipline of scholars; it is the word of God to a mysteriously reconciled world. Theology is, in its most concise definition, "thinking about God," and Christian theology is therefore the pure message of the work of God in Jesus Christ that reconciles sinners to Himself, not counting their sins against them.

Theology helps the church take care of its language so that it continues to be relevant to contemporary culture and so that its language can keep from confusing the people in the pews and in our world; yet all the while, theology seeks to keep our language about God faithful to the scriptures.

Theology means "the study of God". Is there anything in the world that is more profitable than to study God. The Greatest commandment Jesus said was to love the Lord your God with all your heart, and your soul and your mind.

I really think it goes back to the idea "you have to take it apart and put it back together and see if it works" theory. It really does make you understand the real music not just the ear pleasure.

It depends on what or who you think is God. if you were to create your own God you will choose what you believes meets the highest standards, and is the ultimate in power. So getting to know God is essential to the Mind.
