I have Nero 7 and some other program that is supposed to let me burn dvd's but I can't get them compressed.
I have movies downloaded onto real player and media player and can watch them just can't compress them to burn them.

you need DVD Shrink

The vast majority (95%) of home DVD players do not recognize MPEG formats, or most others, either. Although the MPEG2 standard is the basis of DVD playback, it's still a variation. You need a software package that not only burns DVDs, but also TRANScodes the file (more than just converting the format) into the necessary multiple files structure that the DVD player will read. There are a few out there, and almost all of them cost something to buy. I've never used anything but NERO, and it's worked well for me, so I can't tell you about the others, or whether NERO works with MAC.

There are 2 ways :

a) compressing the actual movie files. for doing so you just need a Compresser software like WinRar.

b) Converting your movie file format to other format with smaller size. For doing so you need a Video Converter software

Give us an example. What's the file type and size that you are trying to put on DVD? What size DVD discs are you using?
