Relax. I work in the field of special education and have had lots of parents with this same concern. First, he could just need some more time to develop. This is normal in many children. He will probably catch up. If not then take him to the doctor but don't let them label him with a disability or put him on meds right off. Do your research and take your time. Chances are he is perfectly normal but in case not it is probably not a huge problem; could be he is dyslexic. Give it time; love him and support him in his learning adventure.

The school social worker sent us to a place called the child developmental clinic and found out that he has PDD which is prevasive developmental delays and he has Autism. My son couldnt remember anything he is slow at alot of things he cant run like the normal kids and he cant sit still long enough. he is 7 and he has the mentality of a 3 yr old. So it is hard. he dont follow directions and rules. Good luck hun.

my son has just turned 6 and is highly intelligiant but his concentration span has only just recently started to hold..., boys have shorter concentration spans than females and if your child is supersmart and bored with what he's doing, it may appear as a learning difficulty even though it's not. I use to have to set up 5 different activities at a time for my son just to make sure that he would find one of those things interesting. Try a few different things for him at once, if one of those things holds his attention, it will be because he enjoys doing it and finds it challenging..., trust me, if he's interested in what he's doing, he'll retain the information. My son was pulling apart toy cars whe he was 4 and then putting them back together again, things like playdo, jigsaws etc, were too easy for him therefore, he wouldn't even make the effort! Good luck, perhaps you should get his I.Q tested. Try the Mensa website.

It is very, very normal for kids that age the write backwards still. If the child is in second grade and writing backwards, that is when it is time to look into something.
As for retaining, is he under a lot of stress? Kindergartners have an awfully short attention span and sometimes teachers do not consider that so that may be why your son is struggling.
Talk to your child's teacher to see what she says. A good site about learning disabilities is www.ldonline.org
Best wishes to you and your son.

It depends. Talk to the school's teacher and have him tested. It could be that the information he is given is too hard for him right now. Maybe in a year he will be able to process it better. Children learn at all different levels especially at that age. There are tests out there to help find your child's learning level and the local schools know who to contact about that.

I'd ask your doctor. He may have a learning disability or something he needs to be retrained on. I.e. is it short term that he forgets or is it longer term? My son can hardly remember trips to Disney and they were only from 2 and 3 years ago. He just turned 6. However, his current learning is exceptional. I would ask your Pediatrician if you are concerned and they will direct you to a specialist, if necessary. Best wishes!

it is early to tell but if he had serious learning difficulties then surely someone at kindergarten would have picked up on him being different than other children in some way?
have a word with your sons teacher and see what they think as they can often see things in perspective as they deal with kids his age day in and day out and will be able to see if he is falling behind.
It could be that he is going through a stage of being so interested in other things that he puts previously learned information onto a back burner.

At 5 years old, it's too early to atribute it to learning disability. What is happening now may just be caused by the prevailing environment or temporarily genetical.

My son did this and when i went to his dr. he told me that it was normal, i took him to a therapist who said he had ADHD. But, by the time he was in 1st grade he was put into the gifted and talented program and now he is in the 7th grade. Next year he will probably graduate 8th top in his class. His therapist told me that he was refusing to learn the small stuff because it was boring to him. we just needed to stimulate him more. My child was called retarded during his kindergarten years. (talk about painful) dont get too discouraged.
make sure though that you take him to a dr. and then if that doesnt satisfy your concerns, consider a therapist.

No and please dont mention to the kid that he/she is unable to memorise things... The kid is too young... U should give him food and vitamins and other products which will help the child grow and help its brain... Then u can also find ways of teaching things to the child... easy ways and take examples... may be the teacher is not doing her/his job properly... Teach the child songs, paintings, etc... All the best... I will pray that ur child progress a lot in life
