I don't know the details, but the king at the time heard an oracle tell him that their was a baby that was going to be born that would kill him and take over his kingdom. so he sent his soldiers out to kill all the babies. of course this happened about 100 years before jesus was supposed to be born, but that's the reasoning they use.

According to the story...
When the "wise men from afar" showed up at Herod's court asking about the new king that was born, Herod had no idea what they were talking about. He told them to go and find the new king, then come back and tell him where the king was, "so that he, too, can pay tribute."
After the wise men found Jesus, and heard of the amazing events that surrounded his birth, they went home a different way and avoided Herod.
Herod became very angry and proclaimed that all the male children under the age of three would be slaughtered.
Joseph, fearing for his child's life whisked the whole family off to Egypt to keep them safe. They stayed there for quite some time.
PS They fled FROM Bethlehem, not to. They were in Bethlehem for a census.

A simple read of the Bible will answer you question. They were no fleeing King Herald. They went to Bethleham for a census ordered by King Herod. This census was King Herods attempt to find the the new King of the Jews that the prophicies predicted. When he was discovered he was to be killed.
That is why they could not get a room in the town. All the rooms were filled by the influx of people reporting for the cencus.

They didn't flee to Bethlehem - they had to go there because everyone had to return to the place of birth of the head of the family as part of a census for tax purposes, I believe. As Joseph was born in Bethlehem this meant he, and his family (namely, Mary) had to return there.
However, they had to flee from Bethlehem after the birth of Jesus because they were told by the three Wise Men of King Herod's intent to kill the baby. They fled into Egypt. They got away from a massacre, because Herod then ordered that every first born male child be killed.

Herald had called a census so Joesph and Mary had to travel to Bethlehem as it was Joesph's home town and he had to take part in the census there.
Herald called a census becuse it had been prophesied that a baby boy would be born that would be a greater ruler than he so he wanted to kill all baby boys born and therefore needed to know how many there were- a while since i learned this in school but thats the way i remember it

They did not flee to Bethlehem. They went there because of a decree by the Romans for a census and that was where Joseph's family came from. -
Luke 2
"In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to his own town to register.
So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David."
Herod the Roman governor wanted to get rid of what he thought was a king of the jews and a potential rival to his authority. For this reason Joseph, Mary and Jesus fled to Egypt on the advise of an angel. -
Matthew 2
"When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. "Get up," he said, "take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him." So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, where he stayed until the death of Herod."

Yes, and also infulfilment of the prophecies of the prophets.
Mat 2:3 When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.
Mat 2:4 And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born.
Mat 2:5 And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet,
Mat 2:6 And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.
Mat 2:7 Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared.
Mat 2:8 And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also.
Mat 2:9 When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.
Mat 2:10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.
Mat 2:11 And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.
Mat 2:12 And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.
Mat 2:13 And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.
Mat 2:14 When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt:
Mat 2:15 And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.
Mat 2:16 Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently enquired of the wise men.
Mat 2:17 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying,
Mat 2:18 In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.
Mat 2:19 But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,
Mat 2:20 Saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead which sought the young child's life.

They didn't flee to Bethlehem - they were travelling for the first recorded census, and they had to travel to Nazareth because Joseph was of David's line.
