I know some supermarkets have recycling bins for the bags but they shouldn't be encouraging the use of them so much in the first place. I put fruit and veg loose in the trolley and then they put them in plastic bags at the till! I feel like I'm fighting a losing battle.

Plastic bags are health hazards. It is against environment. It takes many years to decompose.Thick materials never decompose. It affects underground water and pollution. Govt is practially doing nothing.Recycling of plasic bags may be made compulsory or better ban plasic bags.Promote eco friendly jute or paper bags.In some countries plasic bags above 10 micron thickness is banned.Tetra packing or Aluminium foil packing is another option for liqiuids like milk and friut juice.A lot of work has te be done in these directions.
Last year in India (Mumbai) flood was caused maily due to chocking of drainage /pipes etc due to accumulation of plastic bags.

You are correct... but i do not see any rewards for recycling... okay you can say a better planet, it's our duty!!! You would be right, and i agree... but here are a few gripes!!!

if there was a tax reduction on manufacturers, to stop producing such bulky packaging, and plastic bags. Then the manufacturers would obviously take heed!

In fact we would all recycle more if taxes where lowered, because a household is recycling...

i.e. we in my town started recycling... they stopped the weekly grey bin (normal household waste.. nappies etc!), and made that every two weeks...

the council then dropped a green bin (garden waste), and a small green box (plastic and bottles)

so we had a reduced level of service... where the council decided they'd charge extra in tax for the privalage!

Lets put it this way... our government (uk) bangs on about quality family time...

well when you have finished work...5.30pm; go home, cook tea, wash out several containers, rip off labels etc...

gets you to 7.30-8pm, where is the family time!!! i'm nackered and can't do it!!! so that's gone straight away!

we where the ones recycling, doing a job someone else at the tip was being paid for doing!

the council actually makes money from recycling, and the figures are astronomical... but they don't tell us constituents that!!!

So we do the work... where is our savings on tax!!!

Well people power pulled together on that and we got our weekly service back!!!

Not only that but the rats were having a field day... there was a 60% increase in rodent infestations...

So recycling... it would work... but only if it was done right...

I want to recycle... i do where i can... but don't be making money out of me and charging me for it!

this is the issue that needs tackling...

Do you believe everything you hear? Majority of plastic bags are recycled. Plastic bag charges are just a regressive tax that will achieve nothing except grab more money for government to waste.

I feel the same. Recycling is a start, but so many people don't even think to do it. A small charge for a plastic bag would help people remember to bring a carrier for their groceries.

A friend of mine put her bananas in a small plastic bag the other day - I dispair!

They introduced a charge for plastic bags in England in line with the rest of the UK that will have absolutely no effect whatsoever. It is just another regressive tax that government will squander the cash on eco-quangos.

From what I hear many people are carrying bags that look like canvas bags to carry their groceries in, they last a long time, and then you don't have all the plastic bags to deal with, just bring your own bags to the store with you, and not have to worry about the thin plastic bags breaking or piling up at your house, or blowing away from your trash... good idea, huh ??!!

With all the trees we have here, one would think we would have paper bags for our groceries but no, we wrap groceries and everything else in plastic bags as if they can't get rid of them fast enough. We don't even get a choice anynore. Not that anyone up here seems to care. At least in the cities.

I use bags for life and a folding plastic box to pack and carry my shopping in. Not only is this better for the environment but is a lot easier for packing and unpacking!

it was mooted that they were going to charge 10p per bag. As people seem to take more notice if they have to pay for things then I think that it will work. It seems to have in ireland where they introduced it to stop the bags ending up in the street as rubbish

here in france yer hard pushed to find a shop that still gives out placcy bags for free. which is a right pain till you get used to it. you get yer basket go round the shop then get to check out and think" duh! i should have got a trolley, i'll have to buy another big bag to get this lot to the car"
so you end up with a right ship load of big bags in the house that you can't use to line yer pedal bin, so you put them in the boot of yer car. and still you forget to take one into the shop.
result.. boot fills up with big bags which end up getting dumped.
can i help it if my memory is crap?
