Albert Einstein wrote a paper on this in the 1920s. His conclusion: "As a result of the equal but opposing bread/butter (B/B) and cat foot (CF) forces at work, the dropped cat will likely spin violently about on its axis indefinitely. However, the strength of these forces must be considered. The average domestic feline hasn't sufficient structural stability to withstand the torque caused by the spinning. Unless the feline is structurally reinforced, its legs will eventually give way to the B/B force and twist around until the cat lands on its feet, butter-side down. In other words, DON'T TRY THIS! Tampering with two immutable forces of the universe in this way could have wide-ranging catastrophic results."

This is such a funny question and the answer's are great.
I reckon the cat will obviously land on it's feet and then the toast because it hasn't been tied on tight enough will fall off and land on the floor butter side down.

No joke! Some cats are known to have actually licked all the butter off the toast before letting it go near the ground. And YES they can reach!

of course the cat will land on her feet first as the piece of buttered toast is too light to turn the cat around....

Sound like something MYTHBUSTER's should tackle.
They did the buttered toast myth - it was busted. So perhaps they would be interested in the cat with toast on the back scenario.
You should give them a call!!!

The cat lands right side up and the toast lands butter side down. It is a law butter side down no matter what.
