Someone broke into my car last nite and they have stolen my Sat Nav. Shouldn't have left it in there i know! Thing is they wouldn't have seen it so would have broken in no matter what. How much am i looking at the have a decent alarm fitted professionally?

It depends on what kind of alarm you want. For example, you can get one installed at a dealership, but you're probably looking at a few hundred dollars. Or, you can go somewhere like Car Toys or Circuit City and get one installed for around $200 at the cheapest. It also depends on what kind of car you have. If it is the kind that gets broken into often (such as an older Honda Accord), you may want to take this into consideration when buying the alarm and get a more advanced/expensive one.

Seems your car wasn't in a good area. Doesn't matter much about having something IN the car either, people will do that regardless, although it is helpful NOT to have things "attractive" left in the car. Alarms may be helpful in some cases but for the most part they're a waste of money!

Have you ever had a pick pocket rob you? Same thing! If you allow yourself to be a target, you will be one sooner or later. Even parking your car at a mall etc. There are specific reasons WHY someone would choose YOUR car over so many others! An alarm isn't going to help you much.

i just got one installed with remote start for $300. I live in the east bay, California. (remote start is great for those cold winter mornings and you have to get the kids off to school... turn on the heater when you get out the night before and remote start it in the morning and waaa laaaa you have heat when you get in!!!)

It doesn't matter how much you pay for an alarm if they want to break into your vehicle they will do.
