I think that paramedics are respected by people who have dealt with them. When a friend of mine was hit by a car, the paramedics arrived very quickly and were able to stabilize her AND make me less worried all at the same time. When another friend got kicked by a horse and broke her hip, the paramedics let her mother follow directly behind them at good speed downtown and run red lights with them. Paramedics are a dedicated group of people, and anyone who doesn't respect them needs to open their eyes and see the good they do.

I think they are respected. Certainly amongst the other first responders.
Firemen and police officers are seen rushing into situations and taking risks to resolve them by the public and no doubt it all looks very glamorous. The start of any incident is high profile and full of action and drama. When the paramedics turn up their role is to try and instil calm on the casualty and those around them and they are really good at it.
Paramedics work calmly and professionaly in nearly as much danger as the other first responders. They do a very fine job and save just as many if not more lives than the other services.
Don't be dispirited, just take pride in the job you and your colleagues do.

In my experience, paramedics are respected just as much as other emergency service workers. Maybe even more, given the amount of education they go through to become paramedics.

While it is not your fault, you cost to much, but then again, what is the cost of life. But a 2 mile trip around here will cost nearly $1000 and I think that it is out of the question. Unless I am unconscious I will walk or drive before I will call and ambulance. I think the job itself is respected. I know that I do respect the people it is the system that I take issue with.

I think part of it is ignorance. People just really don't understand the field so there are alot of generalizations. But for people in the field, EMS providers are the bastard children of the fire service, always have been and probably always will be..it's unfortunate, since there are definately more EMS calls than fire calls anymore...

Probably the uniform, it's not cool enough. Except for that cool helicopter they get to use.
