I know as a Canadian entering the US I need three pieces of ID.

Drivers license, Ontario Health Insurance Plan card (new one with pic) and a Birth Certificate will work.

I guess it'd be the same for an American entering Canada.

The last report on the new passport regs, said that they won't come into affect until July 2009. I live in a border city we hear reports about it alot.

Technically speaking, you need proof of citizenship. The preferred document is a passport. Most of the time, they will accept a drivers license, for instance entering Canada at Niagara Falls. Also note, that if you bring your children, you need their birth certificate, and if you bring a friend of your child, you need a birth certificate as well as written documentation giving you permission to take their child across the border.

It really does depend on where you are entering from, if you are not coming for the US you might be required to have a passport and a visa.
