We have a chow chow and she is 10 months and has just started bleeding a weeks ago -
1) how long will she bleed for?
2) how long will she be on heat for?
Why are there no books or websites that discuss this issue - it's very stressful for a first time dog owner!
thanks for your help

Many thanks to all of you who answered!
Just a quick one - when do I know it's safe to start taking her to the park again?

CARMEN OUR BABY CHOW CHOW IS VERY MUCH LOVED AND LOOKED AFTER - BOOKS AND WEBSITES TELL YOU THAT THEY GO ON HEAT BUT DON'T EXPLAIN HOW YOU CAN TELL WHEN IT HAS FINISHED - AND YES (DOGDOC) WE DO WANT TO BREED HER - WE ARE SIMPLY NEW PARENTS TO OUR BABY CHOW AND JUST ASKING TO MAKE SURE WE DO EVERYTHING RIGHT FOR HER!
ONCE AGAIN MANY THANKS FOR TAKING THE TIME TO ANSWER.

HI first of all i want to say its great to find some one that as chosen a chow-chow for a pet.i use to breed these.they are not the sort of dog that dose the sit/stay thing. thy do what they want in there own time. I was lucky enough to win at cruffs in the 70s and got back with a another chow-chow in the 80s.wonderful dogs. well they are like other dogs they are on heat for three weeks.be careful when the blood she is loosing turns pink not red. because that is the time. she will be interested in male dogs.the third week is the time you need to watch her.i always keep them close that week.then on the fourth week she will be getting back to normal. that's if life with a chow is normal. myself and many breeders of the chow i know always said this. a chow-chow never lives with people. people live with chows. and you will find this out as she grow up.but they are one of the best breeds to own.I'm luck to still have some of my strain /blood lines in the chows of today.when you have had a chow you will always love the chow breed.best wishes to you and your little girl. sammylee,

(female dogs) normally go into "heat" every 6 months. Each cycle normally lasts 1-2 weeks. A ***** in heat may show little change in temperament or activity as compared with the exaggerated displays of many female cats. Some dogs become somewhat lethargic, while others become anxious and possibly aggressive. The ***** may become restless, making frequent escape attempts.
At no time should a dog in heat be left unsupervised in the backyard or off a leash during walks. Close supervision prevents undesired mating or injury.
During walks, the estrual female urinates more frequently than usual, leaving a trail of scent to your home.
Male dogs can detect powerful chemical signals in vaginal secretions and urine from a distance of several miles. The estrual female may also attract neutered dogs that are aroused by the changes they sense.
If your dog has been undesirably bred, contact your veterinarian within the first few days after mating to discuss your options.
The chow chow heat cycle is like any other females heat cycle. She will begin to swell first then bleed until the end of her heat. It will start dark then at the last start being a pink. If she gets bred, the heat cycle will stop before the usual time if she takes.

You have had an unspayed female for months and you would have known that she was due in heat.
Why didn't you research this BEFORE she came on heat? Books! Books! Dog books. Breed Books. Chow Chow books.
There's loads of information about. As a first time dog owner you have a responsibility to find this information for yourself.
Resorting to asking strangers who might be totally unqualified to answer doesn't impress me. Let's hope you select the right answer about when it's safe to take her out again or you might end up with a litter of cross-breeds.
I just hope that if you decide to breed from her that you do your homework before you even consider having her mated. That will avoid more ignorant questions about gestation periods, whelping, puppy weaning and rearing which seem to appear on here with sickening regularity.

Female chow chows bleeds for about 5-7 days (just like women who are on their period)
They're on heat for maybe 1-2 weeks.
I have 3 chow chows at home, I know how you feel.

you can buy pants for your ***** at your local pet shop these have inserts that throw away like a pant liner lol but they are great for a young ***** used to walks as you can still go out best to keep her on a lead though just to be sure the pants cost around £5 and come in different sizes. If you are thinking abut breading her after getting lots of advice it may help to no that it is said to actually be good for a ***** to breed as it can prevent other problems like women. There can be other comlpcations but i'm sure you are responsible and have your dogs best interests at heart it annoys me when people say you should of had your ***** dressed if you dont want to the only way people are going to get experience of breeding is to actually start of all breeders had a first litter!!!!

Dogs are in heat for about 3 weeks. The actual bleeding lasts around 1 week. (although it can vary with each dog)
