I have a lot to say on this topic but unfortunately no time to write about it.

Yes the Rape of Nanking (or Nanjing) is probably the biggest reason. Absolutely horrific. There are pictures in the museum and probably the net of smiling Japanese soldiers busy slaughtering Chinese people. Even pigs today are slaughtered more humanely than they were.

There are stories of how 2 generals decided to have a competition to see how many people's heads they could cut off with their sword. If the head was still attached by a bit of skin it didn't count.

Or the story of how a soldier sliced open a pregnant woman's stomach and cut out the unborn child within.

Or many stories of raping women while the family looked on, or forcing men to rape relatives.

Then their is the infamous Unit 731 chemical and germ warfare testing labs where they conducted experiments on Chinese people. That's something that no one has mentioned yet. Those experiments themselves are so horrific. Worse than anything that the Nazi's ever did.

There's a famous picture of a soldier posing, smiling for a photo while he's carrying a human head

Excerpts:
To determine the treatment of frostbite, prisoners were taken outside in freezing weather and left with exposed arms, periodically drenched with water until frozen solid. The arm was later amputated, the doctors would repeat the process on the victim's upper arm to the shoulder. After both arms were gone, the doctors moved on to the legs until only a head and torso remained. The victim was then used for plague and pathogens experiments.

Victims were burned with flamethrowers, blown up with shrapnel, bombarded with lethal doses of X-ray, spun to death in centriguges, injected with animal blood, air bubbles, exposure to syphilis, surgical removal of stomachs with the esophagus then attached to the intestines, amputation of arms and reattachment on the opposite side, gassed to death in chambers .......

To add salt to the wound, the Japanese never fully recognized the extent of what they did, nor offered any compensation. Their history books gloss over the fact that they invaded Asian countries and say that they liberated the countries from their Western colonial invaders. So Japanese people for the most have no idea what their country did.

Their prime minister Junichiro Koizumi keeps going to the Yasukuni Shrine to pay his respects every year, but that shrine also commemorates soldiers that committed those atrocities during World War II. So symbolically China and Korea and other countries see it as hypocrisy and a denial of their past. There are also some Japanese leaders that say that the Nanking massacre never even happened.

Chinese modern history is so sad and full of pain, sorrow and poverty. It's a fascinating topic and there's a lot that mankind can learn from it.

Good question. If you read "The Rape of Nanking: The Forgotten Holocaust of World War II" by Iris Chang, you will know how many Chinese were killed by the Japanese in China.

During WWII, most of the western world were focusing on Europe and the ill treatment of Jews. At the same time, similar unfortunate fates were taking place throughout Asia. Right after the war, the Germans goverment admitted their wrong doing and compensated for the lost lives of Jewish people. However, the Japanese government, on the other hand, had never to this day, make an official apology nor compensated their actions to their Asian neighbors.

Having said that, the Japanese government officials have made regular annual visits to pay respect of their WWII soldiers at a shrine. Plus, their history textbooks that failed to record the accurate number of Chinese lives lost.

During the second world war, the Japanese have committed several war crimes in China, like some other places to...it was a war, any thing would go.

At present it is a matte of digging the past for some political gains, no more no less.

There are many Chinese and Japanese Christians, you know. I suppose some Chinese and Japanese people may dislike Christianity, but there are waaaay too many people over there and way too many religions (Islam, Buddhism, Taoism, Confuicianism, Shinto) Japan in particular stresses the idea of syncretism - attempt to reconcile disparate or contradictory beliefs, often while melding practices of various schools of thought. They may marry in a Christian church and get married in a Buddhist temple, for example. Japan celebrates Christmas, Tanabata, etc. They seem to be more open-minded and welcoming of other religions.

well, since the world war 2. the rape of naking is just the tip of the ice berg.
when japanese started their aggression in asia, only the chinese put up with the fight strongly. the japs were angry with chinese for being so stubborn.
and during that time, the overseas chinese were loyal to china, hence when the japs tried to claim south east asia, most male chinese fought side by side with the english against the japs.
this fuel japs' anger over chinese even further. so they were more cruel to 'punish' the chinese than other races.
my grandfather was luckier, he only lost 3 fingers on right hand, & 2 fingers on the left, during the japanese occupation in singapore.
if you see those archive photos during the japanese occupation, you'll see how cruel they are to the chinese, like impaling babies, raping women, & making them as comfort women, men were routinely executed, etc etc.
this,in turn make the chinese even more incensed...and so, became the vicious cycle...

...and vice versa...history. Just like in the US--the North and the South, or in California--Northerners think that the Southerners are living in the state of confucious. It's just old programming. Sooner or later they will lighten up.

Well, Japan slaughtered hundreds of thousand Chinese for no apparent reason. Maybe this caused them to be miffed.
