I'm 24, have been drinking for 10 years and always gone too far. If I don't drink for three or four days and then I have the opportunity, I get totally drunk. It's cost me friendships and relationships. I can no longer afford it in terms of money either. I'm concerned about my health and the state of my liver in particular. I also drink fast and can handle a lot. Once I've had three or four I keep drinking faster and faster. I also start buying rounds of shots for whoever I'm with. Is it purely a question of maturity and self-control, or are there other ways of preventing this? I would appreciate answers from people who have been there before...

been there, exactly... since you're not drinking everyday, it's unlikely you're an alcoholic (not yet, anyway). you've got to stop drinking, period. i know that sounds too elementary, but for me that really was the only way to go. it's been several years, and i can now have a drink or two, stay in control and stop there. but you've got to just stop altogether for a while before you find yourself in serious trouble. i'm afraid there's no other way.

You have a drinking problem, and probably need to consider stopping altogether before something seriously ugly happens. You've been drinking since you were 14 and can't control yourself once you get started? It's not a fun word, but "alcoholic" would be the appropriate term. If you can't control yourself when you start any type of behavior, then you need to quite that behavior.

hi sorry i have not been there before for some reason i always stop automatically whenever it gets out of hand, but if you want tips from people who have been there before why not go to a Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. Other suggestions I can think of is bringing less money, so you cannot spend it all. try to drink some non-alcohol beverages in between and stick to alcoholic drinks that are less strong. so don't take shots but stick to beer. then it goes much slower and you will notice before it is too late good luck!

I have learned from (bad) experience that you should miss a couple of drinks. eg have a coke or a water instead of a beer. OK you might take a bit of stick from your mates but it should keep you out of bother.

If I am out for a long 'session' I try to drink lower alocohol beers and stay away from the 5% stuff like Stella.

Once you start to feel yourself getting drunk, stop drinking alcohol but continue drinking soft drinks, you will still be slightly drunk and enjoying yourself. Plus you will be able to make coherent sentences, attract instead of repel girls...... and you wont fall over, get into afight , gat arrested or spill a kebeb down your shirt! Result!!

Been there & done that. Alcoholics Anonymous has been my answer. Moderation, for me, is not possible. Regardless of 'will-power' my body simply craves MORE. The physical compulsion accompanied with the then activated mental obsession always leads to another 'drunk' for me. My solution was to stop fighting what will not change..."I am an alcoholic". However, today, by the Grace of God and the program of AA, I have been clean and sober for 10 years. Bottomline, I have to want sobriety more each day than I want anything else. Without this priority I lose everything. I have plenty of 'drunks' left in me, however another 'sobriety' is unknown. I never want to take this for granted. I have seen the consequences. Honesty, open-mindedness, and willingness have been the keys. I am not promoting my solution--to each their own. I only know this has worked for me.

I started drinking round about the same age.I'm 36 now and been sober for 4 mths.I think you know yourself that you have to make changes before alcohol gets a real grip and kicks in and potentially wrecks your life.Do you notice your hangovers getting worse? because they will and when you start drinking to avoid the deeply unpleasant feelings of withdrawal, that's when the real problems kick in.You obviously need to cut down.I wasn't able to do that. With me it's either all or nothing. You say something similair when you say you go all out.Has drinking led to any trouble with the law? What I believe you must do is try to control it yourself initially. If this fails you must visit your doctor who can refer you to other agencies for assessment and together you can both work to achieve your goals with your drinking.I am pleased that you have the insight and realise that this is turning into a problem. The support is out there. At the moment I've cracked it with drink but it will always be there as a problem.Try to address your problems now before it gets way out of hand because I believe alcohol is the most destructive substance there is.It can rip your life apart without you even caring!Drinking can be enjoyable in moderation(cliche) but not everyone can do it.It took me over 20 yrs to realise that.Anyway I wish you well good luck my friend.

You got to make yourself not drink so much...WILL POWER...if you don't they will send you to AA. I was sort of going the same route as you but not real bad...so they (military) sent me to rehab. After that I knew I wanted to just drink and enjoy it...so I learned about self-control. Instead of drinking 3-4 beers per hour I learned that I should take smaller drinks and keep to 1 beer per hour...that why you don't get drunk...maybe just a buzz. AVOID SHOTS. Stick to just drinking beer. I have may have alcoholisim in my genes so if I don't do any self-control I could become an alcoholic...which I really don't want to...so I make myself drink slowly and remain under control...

The other alternative is AA (Alcohlics Anonmus). They can help, if you need them to...

For every alcoholic drink you consume, have a soft drink in between.

Just some Goat milk and add to your beer and you will never feel like drinking again. then you would have solved this problem.
