It depends what you mean. Originally, the cross (or crucifix) was simply a convenient shape for an instrument of torture, to which a human body could be attached for a humiliating slow death. It is its association with Jesus Christ which has caused us to see it as a symbol of suffering, and Christians therefore wear it as a reminder of Christ's sacrifice. Other crosses, such as those found on flags were indicators of clans or nationalities.

The symbolic meaning of the cross is 2 things: first with Jesus on the cross. That symbolizes the Love God made for us. He gave His only Son for our sins. John 3:16 second, the cross alone. The cross alone symbolizes that Jesus came back to life 3 day after and defeated death through God's love and His sinless life. He did not stay on the cross. he was taken down, burried, and ressurected by God alone and is well alive.

Christianity: The death of Christ, which is the formation of the "bridge" between God and man and hence the erasure of sins. It can also signify the hardships and tribulations a person has to bear in his/her life, since in the roman times they make the criminals carry their own wooden crosses before they nailed them on them. Combined together, it signifies the glory and wholiness of accepting one's suffering as a form of man's connection to God.

Mathematics: If its "+", its addition. If its "x", multiplication or a variable.

The cross in not a symbol, it was a real thing that Jesus died on. It is Catholic teaching that developed it as a symbol and icon, the Bible has always taught that "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image of anything that is in heaven above or on earth beneath." (One of the Ten Commandments) Many protestant denominations do not use crosses at all.
