mormons and jehovah's witnesses do it all the time. Occasionally others do it as well, but only as a last resort. generally its because the person has done somethingthat goes against the church's rules.

judyr8's answer is inaccurate. Mormons, better known as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, are occasionally excommunicated from the church, but they are not prevented from attending church services. In fact, the Church very much hopes that such people will want to repent and join the Church again.
I am not aware of any church that tells people not to come back.

Most certainly, churches and religious organizations perform such practices in order to purge their membership from time to time. But that's the rub right there: the members must suffer!
I know that the Roman Catholic Church EXCOMMUNICATES their members who contravene and go against the Church doctrines and tenets --either for heresy or blasphemy against ecclesiastical dogmas, such as denouncing the Pope's infallibility for one [which was publicly done by King Henry VIII]; etc...
And I also know that the Jehovah's Witnesses prevent their members from returning to their Kingdom Hall through what they call as being "DISFELLOWSHIPPED" --say, due to some adultery charge maybe[?]-- and they are publicly OSTRACIZED and SHUNNED by the other members in the process, until they are accepted back by their church Elders...
For sure the other church denominations also perform similar EXCLUSIONARY CENSURES of their members based on their Rules and Regulations of their church.
Yet the irony of it all is that priests, ministers and pastors who are charged for, and are guilty of greed, gluttony, sexual misconduct, cruelty, stealing, cheating, lying, bribing, adultery, whore mongering, wine bibbing, idolatry, and blasphemy... somehow manage to stay within the fold of their churches. How come??
Hmm... something IS ROTTEN in Denmark, methinks. LOL.

Years ago people were put out of churches until they repented or changed from the lifestyle they were living, but most churches don't close the door permanently. Today the church is more interested in numbers and money and no one is restricted. Now the problem is that God is saying He will throw the churches out the Church. Read Revelation 3:15 `I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot; I wish that you were cold or hot. 16 `So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of My mouth.

Yes. I got told not to come back to a church, can't remember the name, But there's a lot of them:
The reason I was kicked out was I disagreed with the youth ministry leader. I felt he was preaching a bigoted message, and re-enforcing an elitist mentality among the patrons. I said that it was wrong to judge people for what they do, because it's not their job, it's Gods. That lead to a "discussion" about what God would expect, and I compared them to fascist Nazi's once they began countering arguments with gems like "Well, you are going to hell and I'm glad because I'm not", or "well what do you know, my Daddy's the Pastor".
I also got kicked out of a church for fighting (Saturdays party ran over into Sunday, guy looked at me funny, so I broke a chair over his back...... not my proudest moment but it happens)

yea my old chuch did....well not the whole church just one of the pastors. see this guy cheated on his wife and the pastors found out and they wouldnt talk to him. Get this, they were his parents. Now the dad pastor forgave his son after a little while but the mom pastor would not talk to him. It turned out that because of that the church split and so did the pastors/parents.

Yes..... because he told people they did not have to do the letter of the laws of moses but only to have faith and believe in the doctrine of Jesus Christ and the Grace of God. His name was Paul and he was taken out of the Temple in Jerusalem and almost killed by the Jews... Acts 21
But if you mean anything recently? Nope.

In my church is someone cheats on his wife, they will counsel him, and if he is truly repentant, he can stay in the church, but if he is unrepentant, after much counseling, he will be excommunicated.
