I can help you learn Japanese. We will remain only penpals. I am a 61-year-old male. So, we shall never meet.

you know what? i have studied Japanese for a year and a half. i have graduated now and for three months without Japanese, i have forgotten most about it. too bad, i'm in the intermediate level but i'm learning again now. i'm reviewing and i'm starting in the basic level again, just to refresh my mind about things.
you should also try memorizing how to write and read katakana (used for foreign words) and hiragana (used for their words). i know more than 500 kanji and i think you should also try to learn even the most basic ones. trust me, reading japanese is far harder than speaking it.
what you should do is try to learn the polite form of speaking before you delve into the much more interesting plain style (usual conversational way of speaking). the polite sentences usually end with desu (read as des) and -masu (read as masu). these two types of speaking are way too different and it really is a difficult transition.
you should try learning the most basic sentence structures like: my name is ___ or i am ___. watashi no namae wa (but should be written as ha in hiragana) vane desu - my name is vane. ateneo no gakusei desu - i am an ateneo student. ni-juu-issai desu - i am twenty one years old. you will have a difficult time with the particles though - they are a confusing bunch but once you get the hang of it, you'll live.
try to memorize the adjectives and some nouns first before you go to the verbs though.
the best book for this is the minna no nihongo. i have one because my school provided me and it can be bought at amazon.com. you should try to memorize at least 20 words a day. that's what i did but it proved to be only stored in my short-term memory so if you really want to learn, you have to be really dilligent at this.
ganbatte kudasai! (please do well!)

I have learned Japanese for about two years, but I don't know what kind of difficulties you may have. P.S. I am not a native speaker of English. Anyway, I'd like to help.
