I'm going to get me a German Sheperd. I like them a lot! I'm going to Germany to live and I'm thinking about getting one when I get there. I heard they are because they're the purest pedigree over there for their breeds. Anyone know if this is true if they're bigger than the ones over here? Someone was telling me they are almost twice the size of the American German Sheperds. He said they're huge! I'm like cool!

Some are but not all. It comes down to the genes and if they are show or working lines. As for pedigrees there is no such thing as a pedigree that is more pure than another. The other problem you might want to consider is that the larger the animal is the more problems with hips and elbows he will have. And german dogs have a condition called roached backs. this condition makes the spines rounded giving the impression of a turtles back (shell) You dont want to buy a roached back animal. If the parents of a pup are roached the resulting litter will be roached.

IF you get a GSD from Germany, you can be sure the parents are in decent if not great health. ALL dogs shown for confirmation in Germany must pass the pre-Schutzhund test. This test includes a 12 mile (I think it is 12 miles) run over various ground surfaces with 3 breaks for check by a vet. After the run they are then tested for basic obedience, Heeling, sit, stay, etc. Most if not all dogs of that type, GSD, Rottweiler, Giant Schnauzer, Boxer, Doberman, etc, are working dogs or come from working lines. So yes they tend to be a bit "harder" that your average dog of the same breed.

Actually if anything they may be very slightly smaller but much more athletic. If you get one in germany watch the temperment - the german dogs are less easy going than the US ones and the "harder" end of their range is not always so good for a casual pet

It is the same breed but like abbyful said....white fur is a disqualification in AKC shows. White Shepherds and German Shepherds are the same breed....just different color. People breeding white shepherds are breeding a faulty line that doesn't go with breed standards. As long as it's from a rescue I see nothing wrong with either. Pick the dog based on personality. Not on color.

My son just got one and it looks the same to me. I would think a dog breed is a dog breed no matter where its from. If its different then it isnt a pure breed and wouldnt be called such.
