Most, if not all, of the schools in Manhattan, and the other New York City bouroughs, are given a two letter abbreviation and a number. The abbreviations are PS (Public School, usually grades K-4 or 5), IS (Intermediate School, usually grades 4 or 5 - 8) and HS (High School, usually grades 9-12). For example, there is a school in Washingon Heights called IS218. This is an Intermediate School (or Middle School) that has been given the number 218. Some of the schools also have a name in addition to the number. I'm sure that at the NYC Board of Education, you can see what numbers are assigned in the general area in Mahnattan that you are going to set the story.

Hope that helps!

If you don't want to give a boring though accurate number -name it after a famous person associated with the neighbor hood that it's in- This is a common occurrence by the way. You could be funny : the Donald Trump barber college, You could be musical; the Carol King school of pop composers 1619 Bwy -real address-or you could be serious The Adam Clayton Powell school of social justice 132 w. 138 st .
have fun and use spell check often

Babim gave the best answer. Though if you want to give your school a name in addition to the PS, IS, or HS designation, you would need to pick a somewhat obscure historical figure as schools here have already been named for the major presidents, etc.

Hey, what about Richard M. Nixon High School? LOL
