why not get a p2p program and get the next best thing and get it for free call windows xp pro.

If you want to try before you buy, the best legal way is to go to a friends/relatives house that already has it, shouldn't be too hard to find one since its been out for 4 years now. Otherwise your local library will have XP providing you don't live in (insert obscure location), although they will have a locked down version that you won't be able to freely explore.
The next version of windows "vista" should be coming out sometime in 2007 though, so after waiting this long it might be worth it just to hang in there another 6 months.
I don't think there is such a thing as a trial version of XP or any windows OS for that matter.

To my knowledge, Microsoft would not have a trial version for Windows XP home. You may however try www.microsoft.com. But I think you have tried it already. Also you may go to www.tucows.com or www.download.cnet.com. Hope you will get some. But the best deal would be to search for friends if they have one. You can easily try them. But wait why would you prefer XP-home?
