Put the butter first, using a (butter) knife. Then the jelly. And to eat it, take a bite of all layers at one time, which means the top bread, the filling, and the lower bread.

I'm also a "one topping on each piece of bread, them slap 'em together" type of gal.
It doesn't matter whether you use a spoon or knife, but please, PLEASE don't put your pb'd knife in the jelly, or your jellied knife in the pb! (Actually, there's a very good reason for that... the oil from the peanut butter will encourage the jelly to grow mold). Use a seperate knife for each, or wipe the knife in between, or (like I do... use a knife in the peanut butter, then a spoon in the jelly).

I spread the peanut butter with a knife and then dollop the jelly on with a spoon in the middle. When I smash the second piece of bread on top it mushes the two together.

Jelly first! it is easier to wipe off the knife/spoon/your hands than PB.
As long as you avoid biting your hands - top bottom, middle or lying down will taste just as good!
Bon apetit!

the peanut butter goes down first, then apply the jelly directly on the peanut butter , and its always better toasted, that way the peanut butter melts

Oh MY!!! glad I caught you in time.... it's a Peanutbutter and Jelly sandwich.... you put the peanutbutter on one bread and the jelly on the other bread..... then.... smack them together. You should hold the sandwich in both hands... and bite between. You will figure the rest out. good luck!

The best way to make a PB&J sandwich is with bolonga and mayonaise on white bread.
