Yes, there are cases where a commissioned officer could have as few as 60 credit hours (if they were commissioned through a military junior college ROTC program), or as few as 90 if they went through OCS.

I was just checking into this recently. You can start Officer Candidate School (which is 14months - 1wknd a month, 2 weeks a year) with 60 hours credit, and must have 90 hours credit at the time you finish (commission), & complete a degree within two years of that date (minus any time you are called to active duty).
There are two versions of the above OCS contract. An enlistment first option in which you enlist for four years, go to basic training, AIT (specialty school), and then come back to OCS. If you fail out of this program then you'll stay on as enlisted for the remainder of your contract. The second option is to go directly into OCS, but this requires a 10 year service committment, and if you fail you will be out of the guard & may or may not be able to reenlist.
You can also go to a full-time version that's about four months long, but this requires a completed degree. Thre's also options thru ROTC.

If you discover that a degree is necessary, wait and be patient, because the way recruitment is going in the military these days, prerequisites and qualifications are being lowered all the time in order to keep the volunteers coming.

No. You have to have credentials. Of course, I am not entirely sure of this. You may not need a degree per se, but you'll have to have an academic resume to some extent. Otherwise it may be off to boot camp...
