I have a 2 year old persian male cat. Hehas been walking around the house and falling asleep in the hallway ever since wwe've got him, he always looks bored and lazy, he meows in the middle of the night every time, he always poops everywhere outside his litterbox even when its fresh( he uses it when people are around) I can't afford to buy catnip and scratchingposts, any tips for cheering him up?
How do I get rid of the stinky smell around the house and how do I stop him from 'shedding' everywhere?
Why does he wake me up in the middle of the night and takes over the bed please help!!!

My neighbor gave him to me because they were travelling, and they have already spayed/neutered him.

He uses the bird feeder as a scratching post.

From the sounds of it, your kitty is missing his former family. Strange as it may sound, cats will mess outside the litter box if they feel the smell will help their people find their way home. Cats find their way often by scent, so they assume people will do the same thing. My late cat Sammie - a beautiful Maine Coon cat - used to poop right beside the door whenever I would go away on holiday. I would have to warn anybody looking after her that they would be cleaning up poop off of the floor and to not get angry with her since she was only helping me, in her way, to find my way home. Luckily for me, she did it on tile.
One inexpensive thing you can do to keep him from going back in the same place is to put down lemon slices. Kitties tend not to like the smell, so they won't soil that area. Oust, or some other of those sprays (I won't promote Febreze since they are Proctor & Gamble, a company that still tests on animals) can help with the smell.
I'm thinking the biggest problem your kitty has is lack of attention. He's getting used to a new home and needs a lot of love. Cats always take over the bed at night. I've lived with my kitty for 17 years and just last night I woke up on the edge of the bed while she stretched out on the rest of it! And she's only a tiny 6-pound kitty! (Sammie, her companion, past away 3 years ago). Anyway, just give lots of scritches and brushes - the brushing will cut down on the hair, too. You'll get used to giving scritches in your sleep...cats think 2am is the perfect time to play and get attention...lol.
As for not being able to afford scratching posts, check out the inexpensive cardboard ones. Cats LOVE them and they're cheap cheap cheap!
After having said all this, I would advise you to have him checked out by the vet to rule out any medical problems. Sometimes something as minor as a bladder infection - which can become major - can cause a cat to soil outside the box. Catch it quickly so it won't cost so much.
Good luck!

could be that he needs more attention.. could be that he misses his last owners... get a comb from the dollar store and sit and comb him everyday ... this will help immensely for the shedding of the hair.. when he does not use the litter box ... give him a spank (only once) and pick him up and put him in the little box...and say good boy ... take him out and show him where he did his business and say bad boy - spank once and put back in the littler box.. and say good boy.. so every time he does not go into the litter box .. give him a spank and he will quit real quick..also when he uses the litter box ... clean it out right away and you will not get the smell. if you work .. as soon as you come home .. clean it out.. you can also put a room freshner in the room or by the kitter litter box..
also the dollar stores have really cheap toys for cats...as the cat sounds bored... you can even make things for him.. like taking cardboard and cutting down into 10 strips about 4 or 5 layers and have them about 16 inches long, taping them together at the top and bottom, and the cat will scratch on this.. attach a couple of feathers to a couple of drinking straws(put one inside the other end and shove just about 1" down) ... that you hold ..that are attached and wave this around in the air... cats love to chase things and this is good as you can have him jump in the air after the feathers .... hope this helps you out..

He really does sound bored.
Don't worry about expensive toys. My cats are like spoilt children, they have a wide selection of toys, but only play with coke bottle lids, copper wire, and shredded paper. Each to their own.
The only way to stop the fur is to brush him on a continuous basis, you could pick up a decent brush for a few dollars at discount stores, or even the super market.
If you're at work all day, it seems like he needs some company. Have you thought about getting another cat? It may be like hell for a couple of weeks til he gets used to the situation, but after that he will have company, and someone to play with when you're not around. (and maybe someone to teach him to use the toilet).
I also ended getting an enclosed cat tray (looks like a little house) cos my cat always used to miss.
Hope it helps

Cats will also miss the box when they are sick. It's their way of letting you know something is wrong. Cats do shed, sometimes excessive shedding is from allergies, fleas, something missing in the diet, etc. By the way, a jar of catnip is less than $2 at Petsmart. Stuff a sock with some, tie the end closed and your cat will have hours of fun.

If you can't afford a scratching post....what kind of vet care does the poor cat get? Does he get quality cat food? Many times when a cat refuses to use a litter box it is because of a medical problem. Then again he might just be getting even with you.

He might just want more attention. I posted a question similar to this a few days ago concerning my cat, and it turns out all he needed was attention. He stopped peeing after that. I had a house guest also for a week and a half, who took my time up. So my little guy just wanted attention.

if your cat smells odor in your carpet he will continue to go there and if he was use to doing same from the place he came, it is habbit for him. freebreeze is best thing for stinky smells i think. you can't really stop shedding unless you shave him bald, but bushing every day helps. also the pet stores carry food suppiments (like vitimans) that can be added to food to help with hihs fur. as far as play things, give him a roll of yarn. my male cat is 30 pounds and 13 yrs old. he like to fetch the rings you pull off gallon jugs of milk or hair bands. as far as waking you up and taking over the bed, he probably is just snuggling. my male cat use to nurse on my ears when i jirst got him so to break him from sucking i would growl at him. he stopped sucking but he still likes to lay on my hair and paw it for awhile. i think it's gives him security. good luck

YOU need some natures miracle quick to get rid of that smell and it stops them form revisiting that area again since it gets rid of the pheromones.
he probably is looking for his original family check petco.com for comforting things like the plug in pheromone releaser (that you won't smell) which calms them.
If you scold him it will make the behavior worse, he won't understand what you're mad at him for he needs extra love.
