the standard poodle was originally developed as a water retrever (yep a lab alternative) and there are some who will still do that work and a fair number who mentally are a lab in curlly hair. an increasing number of all sizes are service dogs for the handycapped- even more valiable work.
ANd yes I know of a few who have protection training tiles.
