I am an Atheist. Why?
1) Many God-based religions use fear to drive people to their religion. Nowadays with the younger generation that I belong to, people don't even know what their religion is. Many say that believe in God, therefor they are Christians or Catholics (usually the one the faith their family belongs to), which is false. That is simply Theism. Basically, they fear God and don't want God to be mad at them, so they claim to believe in God out of fear.
I don't fear God. I have found my own path to walk. If it goes against the God(s) then it probably wouldn't matter anyway. God never interefres with our lives.
2) I believe that God doesn't interfere with us because you cannot use any of your senses to interact with God. Most say that God is the love you feel in your heart. This can be disproved. I am told by most people that I cannot feel love because I don't have God in my heart. I am human. Love is a human emotion that anyone can feel. God cannot be love because God does not exist to me. If he did, I could not feel love.
3) You can't prove the existance of God. God is a being that can't be felt with any of our 6 senses. Science does a wonderful job in showing us the creation of out universe and all universes. They are still unproven, but very plausible. I am interested in the M-Theory and similar theories that try to prove the existance of an infinite number of universes. After all, if we live in one universe, why couldn't there be others? Even others similar to our own?
4) Others say they believe in God to be happy. I don't need a being that cannot be proven to give me happiness. I live my own honest life and create my own happiness with the choices I make.
5) People can exist living a loving, happy, and carefree life without God. I am one of those people. However, certain people I know have chosen to hate anything not associate with their God, and hate me and other Atheists. That is not the way of any religion; however, most people who claim to belong to an all loving God-based religion will choose to hate anyone and anything that goes against their faith and threatens their religious views. In my eyes, religion causes more suffering and sorrow than no religion.
I've lost friends and loved ones just for not believing in their God. If he was truly all loving, this would not happen. Just as well, most wars in the history of humans are because of conflicting religious views or because they claim their God wishes them to own something and to use any force necesarry.
I live a happy, God-less life full of love and peace.

I've always felt that religion (Christian religion especially, as that is what I was raised around) was lacking in plausibility. I remember distinctly at age six thinking the whole "heaven thing" sounded made up. The more I read the Bible and look into history the more I realize that religion is the invention of man. Religion seems to me to be a crutch that people lean on. Science shows me that the world has an explaination beyond God and that it may be scary but mortality is a human trait and it should force us to make the most with the life that we have. I find religion fascinating, though. It's such a huge cultural influence and it's importance in society cannot be ignored.
To person below me: If I can't say there is not a God then how can Theists say there is a God? There is no God because if there were one he would have shown himself.

I am an Atheist because after years of research and study the obvious conclusion is there is absolutely no evidence for the existence of any god or gods. As a historian, I know that the books of the Bible (and all other religious texts) are works of myth not fact. Faith is given as the reason to believe but Christians are Atheists towards every god that ever was claimed to exist except for one. They just need to take that final step to get to the reality of this existence. Religion is the root of all evil as pointed out by Richard Dawkins in a great video at Google that is worth your time to watch.

I'm an atheist because I have no reason to believe in god, only logical reasons not to. I think believing in god is ignorant and religion is wrong and dangerous.
The first answerer said:
"atheism is a statement of fact that supernatural entities ("Gods") do not exist in fact."
While that is true for some atheists, I don't think it's true for all. Atheism is "a lack of belief in the existence of God or gods". It doesn't mean the person is necessarily stating for a fact that god doesn't exist, they just don't have a belief that it does. It's a bit confusing and there has been disagreement about what actually makes someone an atheist. You may want to look up strong atheism vs weak atheism (or explicit vs implicit) to learn more.
There is some information about that, plus a lot more about atheism at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atheism

im more apathetic agnostic then atheist... and heres why:
1. The existence of a Supreme Being is unknown and unknowable.
To believe in the existence of a god is an act of faith. To believe in the nonexistence of a god is likewise an act of faith. There is no evidence that there is a Supreme Being nor is there evidence there is not a Supreme Being. Faith is not knowledge. We can only state with assurance that we do not know.
2. If there is a Supreme Being, then that being appears to act as if apathetic to events in our universe.
All events in our Universe, including its creation, can be explained with or without the existence of a Supreme Being. Thus, if there is indeed a God, then that god has had no more impact than no god at all. To all appearances, any purported Supreme Being is indifferent to our Universe and to its inhabitants.
3. We are apathetic to the existence or nonexistence of a Supreme Being.
If there is a God, and that God does not appear to care, then there is no reason to concern ourselves with whether or not a Supreme Being exists, nor should we have any interest in satisfying the purported needs of that Supreme Being. However, our apathy to the question of God's existence does not necessarily mean we are apathetic about promoting agnosticism.

I am not being rude sweatpeaches. I have considered myself agnostic. I also try to have a Buddhist mentality and live a Christian lifestyle. But what I think really gets the doubts going is the hypocrisy. You must ask why people will be religious. I think the reasons are countless that have little to do with true belief. So who is left to follow. One doubt then leads to another.

i am.
i was a miserable catholic. i was scared and lonely all the time.
then i started to read more, watch more discovery channel, and i realized that much about my religion just didn't make sense. how can i be sent to hell just for not believing in god when god only sends bad people to hell, and i'm not really a bad person?
as it made less and less sense, i saw that there probably wasn't a god. the more i read and the older i got, the more sure i became that there is no god, and religion was created by man to keep people under control.
i'm also a lot happier now as an atheist.

If "Atheist" means "anti-religion" then no. I have nothing against other peoples' beliefs and faiths and respect them all as possible explanations. If it means "I don't know if a God exists and am very open to the possibility that there is an alternate explanation to the world that is probably more complex than any of us can imagine" then yes.

I am an atheist because God (of the supernatural kind) does not exist.
Additional comment:
To believe in things that have no proof of existence is either delusional or childish. Atheism does not proclaim that there is no possibility whatsoever God does not exist, atheism is a statement of fact that supernatural entities ("Gods") do not exist in fact.
They MAY exist, but the possibility they exist is a far different claim that the one made by those who claim he (it?) DOES exist.
Anyone who believes supernatural entities exist does so based entirely on faith because there is no credible evidence whatsoever to support that belief.
Atheism is not "anti-theism" it is a statement of fact, to wit: supernatural entities ("Gods") do not exist in fact.

Atheism is an indefensible position, because you cannot prove that there isn't a God any more than you can prove there is a God.
You can believe there is a God but that He isn't obviously revealing Himself (many religions), and you can doubt whether there is a God (Agnosticism), but how can you conclusively say "God does not exist."? You can believe that is the case but nothing more.
I'm Catholic, btw.
