apollo,
I couldn't disagree more. You must be one of those that also thinks we should be on the defensive waiting for another 9/11.
Truth is that offense was the answer this country was waiting for. Defense never worked (look at 1993's bombing attack at WTC, 1998's bombing of the U.S. embassies, 2000's bombing of the U.S.S Cole, 9/11). But what's happened since we went into Afghanistan and Iraq?
You might feel that we've made things worse, but you are also riding the same wagon that supports reaction and not preemption. We learned that lesson many decades ago - Pearl Harbor.
______Edit______
Apollo,
I'll tell you how Iraq is related to 9/11. It's called the "war on terror", not the war on Al Qaeda. Saddam was sympathetic to the terrorist movement and actively supported it. He paid off suicide bombers' families. He defied 17 U.N. resolutions and shot at our planes. He fiddled around with a electric socket and got fried!
Saddam was not installed by the U.S., mind you, he was already in power long before we had anything to do with him. We actively supported Iran for decades until the King was overthrown by the revolution. Because the country was now in radical hands, we had to turn to Saddam to stabilize the region. However, many of his actions were not condoned by the U.S., and it wasn't long before we had two countries actively against us.
You can say it was flawed policy, but let's hear what you would have done differently. People are quick to forget that we are all human subject to make mistakes. No one can predict the future, and many decisions have to be made knowing that there isn't a perfect solution - you take the lesser of two evils.

Yes the american soldiers will fight and continue to do so in the future. Had we eliminated Saddam's sorry A** when we had the chance in the 90's we wouldnt be here now. I was there in 91 and I am in Iraq, as I speak. if we had ignored the United Nations when they said we won't remove Saddam from power but we will impose sanctions on him then we would be alot better off. See check into some and find out how many of the all powerful sanctions that the UN put on Saddam and Iraq were broken between the Gulf war and when we invaded and then ask yourself "why were we not doing this sooner" and you mind find a little clue as to who we need to blame for what is going on in the world today.
Apollo- check your history we didn't put Saddam in power. What we did do is back the Baathist party who put Saddam in power. Our unfortunate mistake with Iraq previously. Saddam and his sons were a menace to any neighboring country and they didn't need to be anything or anywhere near power.
Phwar- you are welcome from a soldier in Iraq.

You simpleton, how has Iraq led to the defense of the US? It has made the world a more dangerous place for me and for you.
hey funkycomedia,
a person with a little information is dangerous, this is your problem. Tell me, how are 9/11 and Iraq related? Saddam was installed as a dictator by the US and when he no longer suited their narrow interests they removed him. Unfourtunately tens of thousands of Iraqis, Iranians, Kurds and US people have died because of this policy.
Okay look -
Putting the Baathist’s in power is the same as putting Saddam in power. It's like saying we put the Nazi's in power but not Hitler.
After Saddam had committed atrocities against his own people, the Iranians and the Kurds, the Reagan government continued to support him diplomatically (Donald Rumsfeld, a high level presidential envoy at the time, even went to shake Saddam's hand) and through the sale of weapons.
There was no link what-so-ever between Saddam and terrorism. In fact there is he voiced concerns at one stage to the Clinton administration of an imminent attack on the US because he knew he would take the blame and lose power. Iraq was a secular state and there was no love lost between them and the fundamentalists and as the soldier said below most of the insurgents are not Iraqis. This war was Al-Qaeda’s wet dream. Recruitment shot up as Arabs saw an illegal invasion of one of their countries.
You ask me what I would have done differently; I would have taken advantage of the huge global sympathy towards the US following 911 and built a global coalition to destroy terrorism from its roots. Instead Bush has turned the US into the most resented country in the world at the moment. The biggest diplomatic failure since Chamberlain came back saying peace in our time.
The sad thing is that all opinions here are homogeneous.
WAKE UP AND LEARN TO THINK INDEPENDANTLY PEOPLE

Thanks pwhar, appreciate the support. As for the people who think we have no reason for being in Iraq, here is a Soldier's answer: We are fighting those terrorists bastards on foreign soil, not American soil for which I am happy. Most of the "insurgents" in Iraq and Afghanistan are not even Iraqis or Afghans. They come from Jordan, Chechnya, Syria, Pakistan, and just about every other Islamic nation. Not to mention even U.S. citizens. Instead of blowing up your local mall they are trying to blow us up in Iraq. That is our job, to protect America.

I would like to think I served for something a little deeper than a visit to the local wal-mart but you are right, simple freedoms such as the ones you mentioned are taken for granted by so many. Only old folks thank me, the younger Americans kinda just ignore me. its OK though, when i do get thanked i always reply "you don't need to"

Manic Street Preachers sang " If you tolerate this, than your children will be next". I like this song, I think it generate, explain what really happen in US. Any military act that suppose to enact war is the last option to choose.
I think you were afraid of your own shadow, and to many of us, we were shooting our own shadow.
May God bless our troops (if form of creating no wars)
