Optical zoom is the lens of the camera moving to get a closer shot, essentially.
Digital zoom is just the camera cropping the outer edges of the picture off.
As a rule of thumb, ignore the digital zoom when shopping for a camera and get one with at least 3x optical zoom.

Optical zoom actually moves the lens to focus on a specific point. Digital zoom uses a computer inside the camera to enlarge the image. For best quality, stay away from zoom period. If you need to zoom, rely on optical zoom.

Optical zoom is done with the lense on the camera, Digital zoom is a digitally made picture. If the camera you are planning to buy only has Digital zoom, DO NOT BUY IT.

From the words themselves, optical zoom means zooming functionality based on lenses, i.e. the lenses of the camera do the zooming for you. Digital zoom, on the other hand, is an artificial zoom, i.e. your camera digitally manipulates the image it receives to make it larger, something like resizing an image on your computer.

well optical zoom is enlarging the image before it reaches the camera's sensor.this is achieved through lenses, forming a "telescope".digital zoom is simply analyizing the image generated by the sensor and enlarging it by extending each pixel to a group of pixels. Conclusion: optical zoom is prime quality , digital zoom is limited as quality.

optical will be clearer, digital will be really bad unless you have high end camera, with high Pixel rating...even then it may still have some pixelation to it, which means you will be able to see the distortion in the print
