You were right to tell her that.
A car salesman's objective is to maximize the dealership's profit. To do this, he has to separate the you from as much of your money as possible. You, on the other hand, want to hold on to as much as possible. This sets up an automatic adversarial relationship between the customer and the salesman.
All of the saleman's training and experience are oriented to getting the best deal for the dealership. He sells cars every day, so he's pretty good at it. On the other hand, most people buy a car only once every few years. As a result of this, the customer is at a disadvantage, both in terms of training and experience. This makes the customer resentful of the salesman. Customers lie too. They lie about how much they like the car, how well they took care of the car they're trying to trade in, how much money they have to spend on a car, etc. The difference is, the salesmen are better liars because they've had more practice.

that was very intelligent of you.
are you asking my thoughts on this? i guess so, otherwise it is not a question.
well yes, some of them can be trusted, but they ALL are looking to sell you. some of them don't care if you are ripped off, and others will, and they will try to give you a good deal.
always do your homework when buying a car. or anything that costs that much money.
with the internet and its many resources, there is no reason not to research the car you want, and find the usual asking price, and the available options.
on most new cars, you can access the manufacturers website and actually build and customize the car that you want, then get an estimate on its price.
also, EVERY price is negotiable. always act disinterested, and give them as little personal information as possible.
this makes it easier for you to get a deal, and harder for them to read you like a book, and thus, bilk you for all you are worth.
