Teachers not being paid enough. We have a shortage of teachers here in Las Vegas, NV. One teacher was interviewed on the news and asked why she was leaving teaching. She said that she was going to be paid more to teach aerobics than to teach children in a classroom. SAD!

My son is in going into the third grade and I have talked with his teachers and other teachers about why children are having such hard time and about how they are cramming so much into such little time. H. Ross Perot had all the testing instilled and the kids are being tested every month = no time for fun. Standardized state curriculm = teachers no longer have the freedoms in their teaching style and if a child doesn't get it, sorry about that, but the state says that we have to move on to something else now. I believe that a lot of parents have gotten lazy as well. A fellow parent was over when my son was doing his homework and when he brought it to me for me to look over, I told him that he had some wrong answers and had him rework the math problems. The other parent told me that was a form of cheating, because I am letting my son know that he got wrong answers. What?? I didn't tell him the answers, I simply pointed out that he had answered the problem incorrectly. I pointed that out to the parent and said that in doing this I can see where he needs additional help and either I can provide that or point it out to the teacher. He (the other parent) told me that it is the teacher's job to teach and when I get involved I am helping my child to cheat. I completely disagree (maybe I should post this as a question). I pointed out that the teachers are forced to follow a standardized curriculum and don't have the extra time to give students like they did when we were in school. He admitted that he never went to school with his daughter, but was adamant that I was aiding my son in cheating. BTW, his daughter flunked Kindergarten and 1st grade. My son is an A/B honor roll student. (Yes, I am very proud of him.)

I would have to say the drug problem among the students would have to be one of the biggest problems we are facing in our educational system today.

The method of teaching...students in America at least don't have any motivation to learn and good methods could help teach them instead of making them hate school.
