The FAA and the FCC regulate the colors of towers if they pose a threat to aviation safety. If the tower poses no threat, there are no color requirements. The general practice seems to be tower camoflouge. If the tower poses a threat then red lights and the red and white paint are manditory. Also bright white lights can be used instead of the red light/paint scheme.

Texas A&M has a radio tower. they have a lengthy status and severe competition with that texas college in Austin whose hues are orange and white. Texas A&M petitioned the Federal Aviation administration for permission to paint their radio tower some hues except orange and white. They were, obviously, grew to develop into down.

The Red lights are for warning airplane pilots at night. I imagine the Red and White pattern is used because it does not exist in Nature. (Therefore it would stick out during the daytime)

Must be something universal about red and white. Entrance buoys (coming in from the ocean) are red and white also. I don't think there is any problem with air planes hitting them. LOL
