Why are some prisoners given sentences that are longer than they are likely to be alive to finish?

because due to some appeals the years are reduced and this way it cant be reduced and the person automatically released- alot of times the reduced amount may be half the original time and turn out to let the con out in his golden years

Because were not sure how long a person will live exactly. If a penalty dictates 8 years, then he will spend 8 years. If the penalty is 80 years, and he's already 40, then he will do 80 years. It's just how it's written in black and white, and basically comes down to if you can't do the time, don't do the crime.

Just for insurance. If a person commits that horrible a crime that they get 4 life sentences, then there really is no chance for parole.

most prisoners are given sentences that have guidelines for sentencing according to their rap sheet (criminal history) and the nature and severity of the crime.

so that they receive the proper amount of time for everything that they may have done. and what if for some stroke of God that they make something that makes us live a lot longer then what we alreay do.. and then they are released because they werent given the proper term for all of their crimes?????
