I just came back from Hong Kong free & easy trip. It was really fun. The HK Tourism Board brochures were very informative. I travelled most by MTR. I did a lot of shopping and sight seeing. Places that I visited were as follows:-
Ladies market
Wong Tai Sin Temple
Disneyland
Giant Buddha
The Peak
Stanley Market
Repulse Bay
Temple street
Jade market
Hope these give you some idea about HK.

Hong Kong has significantly to provide for you as a visitor, if you are coming here on business or for satisfaction Hong Kong generally features a place for you and with Hotelbye you could make it occur the trip to that city. Hong Kong is really a town of charm. The sophistication of an international city, cultural range and sophisticated life style are at the very key of Hong Kong's attractions. The Peak is one of typically the most popular attractions in Hong Kong however, not the sole one. The Giant Buddha, Hong Kong Disneyland Resort and Ocean Park are simply some of the girls of Hong Kong.

It is soooooooooooo worth it, you will not regret it at all. The views of the bay from Victoria Peak. The city skyline, the marvelous, delicious dim sum, the buying and selling of everything that you can imagine from around the world, the incredible rides in the ferries around the bay, and crossing to Macau (the Las Vegas of China) where you'll get to see both casinos and the ruins of the city that the Portuguese left there; going up to see a giant Budha statue that weighs more than a Jumbo Jet on top of the Po Lin Monastery . Don't pass up on the opportunity to go to Hong Kong. I have been there three times and each time I have found new things that I've loved (And I am from Mexico, so I am definitively biased in favor or against Hong Kong, but I did fall in love with the place on the times I;ve been there)

I just came back from Hong Kong. The weather is really hot now.. and there was not much to do. I was there for 4 days. I think you should go directly to Saigon... shopping in Hong Kong is not bad tho' but only in the malls (almost same as shopping back at home) the quality of stuff at the market places are not good, and not worth it unless you are just buying decorative stuff.

I would say, not worth it!
cost wise, average 3 star hotel in HK can be $100 per night, couple of nights there will costs more than your flight savings. HK is not a cheap city, food and room costs abot the same as in US.
attration wise, because of the air polluion, you can hardly see anything except grey fog from Victoria Peak now. Shopping wise, street shopping is fun, but you have to bargin a lot, which can be stressful.
overall, if you are into fashion, it may be worth to pay HK a visit. Otherwise, i will say pass.

yeah, you should make sure to get to HK. It's civilization as you know it, with a really interesting fresh, cultured, technical twist. For no other reason, you shouldn't allow your trip to Asia be solely defined by Vietnam. However, If you think you may someday come back this way (and your feelings on this are probably going to lean closer to "I'll be back" once you get here), save it. spend your time in vietnam. I like hongKong (and Bangok )because it kinda eases relatives, who've never left the US before, into the whole Asia thing and going inland from there. re-reading your question... skip HK. take it long and loungingly through Vietnam. stop at beaches on the train ride up to Hanoi. I assume you are taking the trains. watch your stuff on the trains. don't get absent minded and mess up your trip. and DON'T forget to keep track of the calendar once in Hanoi. I lost track once in Luang Prabang and missed my flights in Bangkok by a week. get one of those new fangled watches that have the date on them. hahaha. Eiya! 3 weeks! how in the world are you going to learn any of the hill tribe languages? You probably can't even make it to the mekong! You like Baguette? Hanoi has nice french bread. yum. don't over pack.

One of the best ways to drink in Hong Kong is to have a walk around all the bars first and have a look which ones are doing special offers and what time they run Happy Hour. Most bars have a Happy Hour, which is a cost effective way to drink. Also keep in mind the races on a Wednesday night at Happy Valley race course, you only pay $10 for entry and pay around $100 for a jug of beer. Also Wednesday nights is ladies night, during which many bars in Wan Chai give free drinks to the ladies. Ned Kelly's Last Stand A really good bar to go for pre-partying. Located on Ashley road parallel to the famous Nathan road on Kowloon side, it's an Australian themed jazz bar with great food and good live music almost every night starting at 21-22, which is about when the happy hour ends. The place is laid out with long tables where total strangers can sit together, it's quite big with the frequent visitors to Hong Kong such as travelling businessmen and the art-community. Sticky Fingers The awesomest place around? Who knows, but its a nice place to get some women and listen to a great house-band play live rock music on stage. The drinks are pretty good too. Knutsford Terrace is a popular drinking and dining spot in Kowloon but there are many other places in and around Tsim Sha Tsui. Some of them can get pretty expensive though - up to 50HK$ for a drink in some places. Joe Bananas A wonderful place located on Lockhart road, where the drinks are friendly and the women are cheap (or was it the other way around?). Skitz Sports Bar A bar with a good selection of drinks with 2 pool tables, darts and large selection of sports on big screens. Armani Bar A more upscale bar with great house music in a trendy indoor setting as well as an outdoor section. Red Bar A mostly outdoor bar at the top of the IFC building (in Central) that usually hosts big events such as on New Years Eve and more.

Hong Kong is definitely worth it for shopping. And if you do decide to go, you might want to stay in one of the Marco Polo Hotels (either Hong Kong, Price or Gateway), because they are located right in Harbor City which is the largest mall in all of Asia. It truly is wonderful and you'll see every darn designer brand name plus more.
Food there is also quite wonderful.

I will say it will be worth it. It will be totally different from Vietnam. HK is more modern and technologically advance, so you do get quite a fair bit of high tech gears there. Shopping wise, it has more branded and luxurious items and its annual sale starts from July. So worth a visit before you get to Vietnam.
