You can't remember anything afterwards, only the before. I don't understand how your brain does that. Is it like being put in a coma, how you don't remember anything, I just don't understand how it does that.

There's a biological explanation to it. The simplest explanation I can think of is that there are certain receptors on your cells that allow the other cells in your body to communicate with each other so that they can properly work. When an anethesiologist drugs a patient, the drug may temporarily hinder those receptors from receiving "instructions" from other cells.

But no, like the others have said, it's not like being in a coma (even though you don't remember anything).

It's not like being dead - it's like being asleep. Your brain is still functioning just fine, and you can actually dream while under anesthesia (I had a short surgery and dreamt about Italian food the whole time). Anesthesia can also have an amnesiac effect *after* you're out of surgery, but that varies from person to person.

It is not like a deep sleep in that you do not breath on your own. The drugs given to you paralyzes you to the point that you even you lungs stop but your other organs keep going. The drugs also have a amnesiatic effect. When a lesser amount is given it is possible to have a pt aware and talking but the pain is lessened and movement is suppressed. They still don't remember anything afterwords even though they swear they well.

It induces amnesia so you have no memory of the pain or the experience. There are receptors in your brain for just about everything - consciousness is one and that is where anesthesia works. It's nothing like being dead. Dead means your brain and your heart have ZERO function.

It's a deep sleep where your central nervous system slows down, and also slows down your brain, & your heart. That is why it is hard to wake up as well.
