Unfortunately we all have different brains and different ways we think of the same thing. We also have different taste because we were exposed to different flavors during your life.

Both. We do acquire a taste for foods that are common in our culture, but everyone's taste buds are not equal. There are only a four (I think) different tastes that your sense of taste can distinguish, sweet, salty, bitter and sour. I think, this is trying to remember back to my elementary school days, you know, like 40 years ago. Each individual taste bud can only distinguish one of those tastes. The proportion of each type to the others influences the kinds of foods an individual prefers. In addition, the number of taste buds a person has varies from person to person and also the sensitivity of the taste buds varies. Picky eaters have been shown to have more and more sensitive taste buds. Also, the acuity of your sense of smell will influence how foods taste. So lots of things go into determining what types of foods you enjoy.

Well, colors look the same to everyone (except the color-blind) and we don't all have the same favorite color. It's the same way with food, although things *can* taste different to different people depending on the location of their taste buds.
Edit: Also, what kinds of things you associate with foods can influence your opinion of them. If you ate tomato soup when you had the flu and barfed it back up again, you might get an aversion to it. Or if you eat something so often you get tired of it and go ugh at the very thought. Heck, when I was a kid I went through a phase where I hated some foods because my cousin (who I thought was the closest thing to God) didn't like them. The same principle can apply to what you like as well as what you hate. I'll always have fond memories of mulberry pie, for instance. :)

There are nerves, lots of them, some are more sensitive than others. Some are dull or less sensitive than others to. The more sensitive number of nerves on your tongue, the more likely you are a much more picky eater or find many things " distasteful " in food. The people who have semi- sensitive to normal even dull nerves in their tongue, may only dislike a couple things they eat, or not care as much as someone else might about (i.e.)........ Mayo on thier sandwich ......
Also, food & which is our favorite kinds of food does also depend on smell, look ( visual presentation of the food, what's more appealing visually ) and then taste. So it combines all three senses, but taste is definitely the strongest.

It's an acquired taste for a certain type of food. I was raised on meat and potatoes and bland, bland, bland. So now I love anything spicy or different. Thai, Korean, Mexican. I never got to try anything new when I was a kid, so as soon as I could I started experimenting and discovered that I loved different kinds of dishes. Most of us still go back to those comfort foods when we need them, though.

The taste is absolutely a factor in our likes and dislikes, but smell is important and the texture plays an important role. Bame taste different texture will ghenerally produce a different preference.

Although our taste buds are the same, our brains/minds perceive the sensations differently.
