I had a $1300 hotel bill charged to my account by hotwire.com after I cancelled it with hotwire according to their rules. The way to protect yourself when using these third party companies for trips, hotels, airfare, and car rental is t never sign on if they have a clause preventing you from seeking chargebacks through your credit card company. Almost every time you dispute any travel charge to your credit card account, it will be removed from your bill immediately. Scammers want you to believe you can give up that right. That is not true. You cannot be forced to do this.

ALL OF those bulk consolidator websites are scams. Priceline, Cheap Tickets, Hotwire, Lowestfare.com etc...these bulk consolidator websites are traps for consumers. The more unknown a website is the worse they are. Anything advertised as "Cheap" is just that. They lock you into a binding contract and you can not for any reason alter it. After working for an airline for many years, I have seen the worst passenger experiences using these websites. You have no flexibility when it comes to making changes and if you want to file a complaint, make a change or get a refund (which with these sites is not possible), they do not cater to the customer. They have your money and that is all they care about. Ive used Hotwire for Hotels and Rental cars for trips that were not important, but I refuse to use these sites for air travel or a trip where Im spending precious time on, like a vacation. There's too much that can go wrong and air travel is one place I want choices in. The major airlines are having to be more competitive now and you can get comparable rates with better schedules. These websites offer rediculous lay overs and connection points, its sad that most people do not take the time to educate themselves on travel just to save a few $$$.

No matter what website you use ALWAYS READ THE FARE RULES!!! That way you know what you are agreeing to before purchasing.

There is a consumer advisor and advocate here in Atlanta, Clark Howard. Contact him or his radio show, tell him your story. He is full aware of all of the travel scams and they will work hard to get you back what ever you are entitled to if your leg work isnt doing any good.

http://www.clarkhoward.com

The toll free number to reach him on his show is (877) 87-Clark and his show runs from 1p-4p EST. Im sure he'd love to hear your story and find a way to help you out. If you can not contact him during his show hours, the consumer action center is available from 10a-7p EST and you can call them at (404) 892--8227. Trust me, its worth calling him.

I don't use these "online discounters" I have just heard way too many stories with all of the problems that can happen. I would never want to take the risk of runining my vacation to save a little.

For some reason, it seems that even though these companies continue to use questionable practices, they are not being stopped.

I prefer buying my ticket through a travel agency. It only cost about an extra $30 and to me it is worth it to have a paper ticket in hand. Hope you can recop your money.
