If you truely read the bible then you would see that it fits into any time. The more you read the more you understand. Those of you that don't read it but comment on it, try reading it first to educate yourself about what it is you are argueing about. Ha ha! That's how I became a christian!! LOL!

A real Christian needn't disregard the Bible in order to "fit into" modern times. Maybe all any one needs to do is look at the Bible in a different way. You know, view it as a terrific spiritual allegory rather than a scientific document. And why do something like that? Why try to fit into modern times? Oh, come on. You don't wanna live in the middle ages do you? Because if you do, just a bit of advice ... Don't go for long walks. You never know when you might get to the edge and fall off. Just think about it. ;-) ~ Peace & Blessings ~

The Bible is becoming outdated and so is it's belief systems. That is why so many people are turning away from Christianity towards a more open-minded, spiritual view of life. Scientists have since proven that all matter is made up of essentially the same thing. The Bible was written in the day when the earth was the centre of the universe. People have woken up since then. Its called evolution. There will still be followers and believers, but eventually the religion will die out, as all things do.

They are right you shouldn't you should follow the bible to the T and be racist -- agnist mixed marriages

But then the Jewish leaders came to me and said, "Many of the people of Israel, and even some of the priests and Levites, have not kept themselves separate from the other peoples living in the land. They have taken up the detestable practices of the Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Jebusites, Ammonites, Moabites, Egyptians, and Amorites. For the men of Israel have married women from these people and have taken them as wives for their sons. So the holy race has become polluted by these mixed marriages. To make matters worse, the officials and leaders are some of the worst offenders." (Ezra 9:1-2 NLT)

and follow the bible and kill people of other religions

Suppose a man or woman among you, in one of your towns that the LORD your God is giving you, has done evil in the sight of the LORD your God and has violated the covenant by serving other gods or by worshiping the sun, the moon, or any of the forces of heaven, which I have strictly forbidden. When you hear about it, investigate the matter thoroughly. If it is true that this detestable thing has been done in Israel, then that man or woman must be taken to the gates of the town and stoned to death. (Deuteronomy 17:2-5 NLT)

be a bigot

One of them, a prophet of their own, once said 'Cretans [the people of Crete] have always been liars, vicious beasts, and lazy gluttons.' That testimony is true. (Titus 1:12-13 NAB)

beat your slave

That servant who knows his master's will and does not get ready or does not do what his master wants will be beaten with many blows(Luke 12:47 NIV).

If a man beats his male or female slave with a rod and the slave dies as a direct result, he must be punished, but he is not to be punished if the slave gets up after a day or two, since the slave is his property (Exodus 21:20 NIV)

So ask yourself should are you okay with doing these things or should youdisregard some of bible scripture to fit into modern times. I would hope your answer would be yes. The bottom line is that the bible was written by men. And even if they were divinly inspired we cannot be sure they wrote only what god told them. Some of it was acts that were seen. With acts it is open to interpertation. Lastly, look into your heart before you act. Does it feel as if that is the right thing to do? If you feel that something is true in your heart then follow it. If not then disregard and just try to learn something from the lesson.

I don't think "disregard" is the right word... more like "reconcile" what the Bible says which is in conflict with modern science. The people who wrote the Bible had no way of knowing how wrong some of it was, so we should work around it and not throw out the baby with the bath water. Much of what is written in the Bible is still useful and entertaining... it just shouldn't be interpreted as the literal truth.

Well basing one's faith on the written word is tricky indeed. I mean there is scripture encouraging fathers to bash their toddlers brains out on a rock if they are displeased with their families. As angry, sad and frustrated as fundamentalists make me, I seriously hope there is no one in modern times calling themselves a Jew, Christian, or Muslim who still does that. As for it once being a valid or religious thing to do... I cannot imagine. Perhaps if the children were going to starve or be sold as slaves or something... Basically Christians should disregard any part of the Bible that no longer serves the Spirit, (that by which man is saved), or the Body, (that by which a saved man is sustained in the Spirit), of Christ.

Why should a fundamentalist ignore modern knowledge in order to make life fit a narrow interpretation of the Bible?

You should not disregard Scripture for modern times, but one must understand that there are moral lessons that are universal in Scripture.

how to treat others, respecting your parents, etc...but some things are often taken out of context for individuals to make a point. They (mis) use scripture to these ends and that is something that should at all times be rejected.

Because the bible is incompatible with modern society. Humanity must evolve and so should religion as it has for eons.
