if its a new laptop esp. top of the line there won't really be any problems with it usually the biggest problems with laptops is the battery if it isnt lithiom ion get a lithiom ion battery also when you first get it let it fully charge and discharge a few times before you use your computer after that never let your battery fully dischage if its running windows you should be fine
but if its running the evil mac i cant help you there

the way i see it.if you want your laptop to retain its speed over the long run, make sure that you uninstall extra applications such as aol ads that come with the new laptop.make sure you occasionally defragment your hdd so it will load quickly.in the end no laptop will be free of problems because nothing is perfect but for example do some research see if the laptop blows air onto your wrist while your typing with it.some can find that annoying.dont download applicaions that you arent going to use that you wont know how to uninstall.thats just empty space your taking up.try to get atleast 1GB of ram.make sure it has a large at least 9 cell battery if your going to be using it for trips.the biggest thing though:make sure that its size and power accomodates your lifestyle.dont get a desktop replacement with a 19 inch screen if your going to be taking it with you to bussiness meetings.make a good choice and you wont pay for it.

All laptops should be good, straight out of the box. If the laptop has physical dammage, you should return it, if it has a warrenty. One common problem is setting up the internet connection for your computer.
