Pit bulls are still dogs- so anyone else's dog may have done this as well. Don't worry about people giving you a hard time about owning a pit.
Anyway, how much time do you spend with him? It could be that he's starting to get very bored. Does he have the same routine every day ?
He has a lot of energy that he has to get rid of. Does he have any other dogs to play with or anyone else to play with?
If you're at work all day, give him some mental activities to do. Get him a Kong treat, and fill it up with hard-to-reach food, like peanut butter. Peanut butter sticks to the sides, and it is a treat no dog can resist, so he'll be mentally worn out when he's done with that.
Go outside with him, it'll distract him when he's outside. Don't leave him outside alone - dogs hate that. Since your dog is an inside dog, just take him out, let him go to the bathroom, play with him a bit and bring him back in side. He'll like it more- dogs hate being alone outside.
If you have any other questions email me! I'd be glad to help you!

I've had pitbulls for going on 21yrs, sounds like you have a puppy that needs to play with something they love a dangling rope with a knot tied in the end and secured firmly to a tree limb, put it just out of reach for the dog, in no time you will need to raise the knot again. It helps them to strengthen their necks and their teeth.
Never had a pit bite anybody either, they are very protective of their family.

Another thought, I've had different breeds of dogs and most of them will claw the bark if their are any creatures(any bugs, ants, termites) living inside the tree.

A dog chews on things that have resistance to them. I used to have 2 pittbulls and one used to hang from a lawn mower blade hung in a tree for hours on end and the other carried around a 25lb bowling ball everywhere he went it was his "blankie". A pittbulls biting and crushing power are 30 times that of a regular domestic dog. A lab type or similar will like something like the"KONG" toy. Your pittbulls need more of a challenge go to a bowling ally and ask if they have any old 13lb bowling balls in back and they might just give you one or look at garage sales. He needs something that challenges him and works those extensive jaw muscles. Good luck.

It sounds as if your dog has a lot of unused energy. I have two pits who are very loving but also need a lot of attention. I run them daily and also play fetch. I never had one that ate bark, but they both love rocks. I keep plenty of toys around such as balls, ropes, anything else I think may last awhile. I also have a huge hill we play fetch on. They love it and it uses up all that energy they have. I don't think this is a sign they are a vicious dog. I think it is a sign they get bored.

My pit has lots of toys and bones inside to play with but when we're outside she still picks up sticks and pine cones to chew on.
She's never chewed on the trees themselves. Is she growling and wagging her tail while chewing? Maybe she's trying to play with them. Mine chases all the lizards that are around the trees.

Just make sure the dog has lots of chew toys inside.

Mine doesn't chew at all, My advise would be to ask a local professional. Go online or check the phone book. there are usually people who have alot of experience with bully breeds so make sure you find one of those types of trainers. It could be nothing, I've known of ones who would hang from a tree branch forever all by themselves. but seriously. ask around to professionals. you don't want to let it go if it is serious.

When any dog does this they are upset about something and need to be agresive on anything they can tare up. It's better a tree than you or a passer bye.

if he is biting it then you could use bitter apple sprays( sold at petco and petsmart). the dog doesn't like the taste so he'll stop. But if he or she is clawing the tree i would just put some chicken wire around the tree.

I am glad your opinion is unbiased and educated.

It sounds to me like he/she is just bored. I have an Am Staff and she gets bored easily. I got her about 20 or so knotted ropes and she enjoys every one of them and is not bored anymore. The bully breeds seem to get bored easily. They do need tough toys to withstand the chewing.

Sorry my pit bull doesn't do this. Maybe it is bored or u have squirrels or something that taunts her and she figures she will eventually get even with them.
