I would strongly recommend you look into getting yourself a used Honda or a Toyota. They hold their value well and get excellent gas mileage. They also are well-known for being reliable. All my cars have been Hondas, and I have never had any problems with them. The Civic gets the best mileage, but I don't like its acceleration as well as that of an Accord. That's just me, though. I also like having a car that is smaller, but which 4 people can fit in comfortably in case I'm out with friends.

By the way, you're also better off buying a car from a private owner than you are getting a car at a dealership. Dealerships don't offer cars that are any better than you'll find from a private owner, and they charge a lot more. You should keep an eye out on the classified ads of your local paper, or for car ads on craigslist.com. You can protect yourself from getting ripped off by making sure the car is not salvaged, that they have the title, and by having it inspected by a reliable mechanic before you buy. They'll tell you if the car has anything wrong with it, and you'll save yourself a lot of money versus going to a dealership.

I have an idea that you might not like...but it is a good idea. Buy a Used Ford Focus. The Focus has been on Car and Drivers 10 best list for 6 YEARS now. They are Great cars. They also get very good mileage. Expect about 32mpg in real world driving. Those toyota stories about 40mpg??? that is on all highway at 50mph with the windows up and the AC turned off. Real world the Corrolas get about 32 city 36 highway.

You could buy a REALLY nice low miles 3 year old Focus for only about 6500-8000. Then you would still have money to pay the taxes/liscence fees, buy a years worth of insurance, AND buy a years worth of fuel!!!

Toyotas and hondas are good cars, however, due to the religeous fervor that people follow them with, they overpay for them driving up prices. I dont care what they tell you...Nothing lasts forever...A reasonably maintained Focus will last 200,000 miles easily...But who really cares? You will probably be bored with whatever you buy in a few years and trade-up anyway!

Be sure to pay cash for your cars. They ride better when paid for!

The Toyota Yaris is pretty cheap and it gets good gas mileage. Also, because it is a Toyota, you know you are getting a good quality automobile. However, you may find the car rather small in size. You may either think the design is cute, sleek and attractive like a Honda Civic Si, or you'll just think it looks too futuristic, small and depending on your age and interests, strange. However, the size is what gives it the great MPG rating. Anyway, I think it's what you're looking for and it's worth checking out.

With $11,000, you can't buy any new cars these days. You're better off a used Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic, which can give you great gas mileage. Forget about hybrid, since they costs more. Believe it or not, a used Toyota Prius costs more than a brand new one.

First decide what you are going to use it for. If you are using it for short trips as opposed to long distance or need to carry more than some types can hold. Define the what and then work on which.

older toyotas get like 40 mpg. they just came out with a new model that gets 40 but it's a little more than 11,000. they're a little too small, though.
