I'm going to book a flight soon to go to my grandpa's niece's wedding in August. Let's say, if the wedding gets cancelled and I've already booked by flight, how do I go about getting a refund from the airlines? Anybody here have been in that situation or work for the airlines?

You can buy a refundable ticket. It will cost significantly more than a non-refundable ticket, but if you are that worried that the wedding won't happen, then it would be wise to do so.

The best way to do this is to pay for flight insurance at the time you book your flight. Flight insurance allows you to cancel your flight if the wedding gets cancelled. Nowadays, most airlines will not refund your money...instead they give you a voucher for a future flight. You may be able to transfer the voucher to somebody else (in other words, you can sell the voucher for up to it's face value and recoup your money that way.) Check with the airline as to what flight insurance actually gets you...in some cases, if you insist on a refund, they will deduct $100 from the cost of the ticket...in which case, you are better off with the voucher.

Flight insurance usually costs about 10% of the cost of the ticket...so if the ticket is $400, the insurance is $40.

I highly recommend flight insurance if you are at all unsure if you will be making the trip.

I know that when my family has travelled on vacation in the past, our travel agent has mentioned cancellation insurance. However, I don't know if it would apply to simple airplane ticket transactions. I would go through a travel agent and inquire about cancellation insurance. If you're booking directly through the airline, ask them before you give them your credit card info. The last vacation my family went on was a cruise around the time that my uncle was dying from cancer. Luckily he stayed around a few months longer so we never needed to use the cancellation insurance but there was a possibility so our travel agent made sure we were covered.

Are you expecting a cancelation? Lol... What I've seen(I'm a small print reader) is that unless you buy the more expensive types of tickets, you are pretty much out of luck if you need to cancel. Call the airline, or read the small print if you're buying online to be sure what the terms are on the ticket that you buy.
