I`ve heard some pretty wierd and funny Last Names lately and could not believe the names, Bloodsaw, Funkinstien, Turnip -Green, Snodgrass,.......etc. How do people select Family Names, Do you know ?

No idea how they select family names but I know a few. I work in a hospital and we get residents from all over the world. Rhannatunga, Tippiswani, and QueQuep. I don't even think I spelled them right.

Here are some strange names.

Scudmore Surname Origin
(Origin Cornish British) From scoudh, or scuth, the shoulders, and mor, big, large.--Broad shoulders. Scheidmuur, Dutch, a partition or division wall.

Spotten Surname Origin
(Origin German) To mock, deride, ridicule.


Many last names came from careers of our ancestors: Carpenter, Baker, Farmer, etc.

Some came from who you were related to. O' or Mc mean son of.O'Brian was son of Brian.

Snodgrass Surname Origin
(Locality). Grass trimmed and smooth; short grass.

Yes, I do know some, but such names, first or last may seem strange or funny to others but not to everybody. Because sometimes pronunciation of such names may connotes something to other nation or race due to their language or dialect.

yo balke - stop being so uptight. its not like farve's name is common. The people outside of Geern Bay and Missahippie can spell words that you can't spell. Would it make you feel better if people mispelled tom bardy's name too?
