Check and make sure there is not a floppy disc or CD in CD-ROM. This is usually what causes these errors.
If that doesn't work, then the windows 98 is corrupt and you will need to reinstall. before reinstalling, get a backup floppy 98 from a friend, or the net, and see if you can get in.

Easiest? Take it to a tech. Check for a disk in the floppy drive.
If there isn't, then there's probably something missing from the system files, or the system files may have gotten corrupted somehow...
You could try re-installing 98, but you risk losing some settings... I don't think you'll lose too much...
Or you might be able to use the "sys c:" command from the 98 boot disk.
The options are up to you.

Actually the first step is checking your computers BIOS to make sure its booting to the hard drive, this should also help you determine IF the hard drive itself is being detected.
to enter bios you either hit Delete or F8 or F1, those are the usual ones. Sometimes its the ESCAPE key. Once you are in the BIOS check the boot sequence make sure Hard Drive is first. but most importantly, check to make sure the hard drive is detected, you should be able to notice this on the very first screen in the bios.
My guess is either the hard drive died or is not hooked up properly or the motherboard fried. that is unless one of the earlier easy suggestions did not fix it, non-bootable disk in floppy drive or cd-rom.

Umm, check your floppy drive. You probably left a disk in.
If that's not it, then there might be an issue with your PC detecting your hard drive. Search on Yahoo or Google using part of the error message in quotes.

eject the disk in the floppy drive and press any key
when you start your computer make sure theres not a floppy disk in the drive
also if the computer looks to other drives when starting up make sure they're empty as well
also you can change which drives it uses during startup altho i would keep the floppy drive in startup incase you need to use a msdos startup disk

I had an identical subject as quickly as I have been given my new pc, i ended up wanting to take it decrease back, a definate fault with the disc rigidity. what i might propose is attempting out out residing house windows troubleshooter, placed on initiate > help and help, perhaps their is a hardware conflict or blunders, residing house windows help can help you with this. pass during the recommendations and then if all fails attempt cleansing the rigidity using a lens air purifier (particularly less expensive). If no longer something enables, it is greater beneficial than liking that your rigidity has had it.
