Thank you very much for some very valuable thoughts on the subject. FYI: My dog was hit and killed by a car on August 5, 1967. He was 11...I was 15...It wasn't until a year ago when we sold my parents home that I realized I was really closing the book on another aspect of my childhood. I don't suppose I'll ever disturb my dog (it's been 39 years)...but perhaps this question & these answers will help others to decide what they'll do if ever faced with this situation. P.S. We removed the marker and the new owners haven't a clue! But WE KNOW!! Thanks again!

Why not try the direct approach? Just go to the door and ask permission to dig the pet up? Promise to close the grave back in and leave it neat.

Sad that you do not own the land the pet is in. You have no legal right to go there and dig up that person's property to get your dead pet to bury it another place. The best thing you can do it go to the owner and explain your feelings and if they are kind, they will help you get your pet back. Do not be frightened what you see because the animal will change under ground over time unless you have put in a air tight container. I usually bury my pets in a Igloo Cooler. I put something soft inside for the pet to lie on.
Death is hurtful. Maybe it is best that you let the pet rest where it is at. Rev. TomCat

You could try and talk to the owners of the property. But why bother the pet. Leave it be.. If the new owners were to know they might disturb the grave. I would let it be...Hope this helps..

Politely explain to the owners about your pet and that would be happy if you could bury the animal at your house. My childhood dog is buried at my old house and the new owners built a deck over it. We almost dug her up when we moved, I don't know why we didn't.

Just tell them that you feel lost without the animal being near. It was a dear part of your family and you want to move it to your new house. Most people have had a pet and lost a pet and understand. Assure them you will not dig a huge mess in their yard and let them know you will refill the hole and give them a bag of grass seed for planting to make up for it. Good luck.

Call the police. Tell them that your dog was stolen such and such years ago.. and you think it was your neighbor. Make up some story about some proof that you have. You saw this or that. It's usually illegal to burry animals in your backyard depending on the city/county codes.

OR JUST ASK THEM!

Have you asked the owner of the property? If so and the answer was no maybe a solicitor could help you.

If the neighbors gone ask how long they will be gone. If there is enough time hop over the fence bring a shovel, And dig it up throw it over the fence and cover the dirt up.

Tell them the truth and work out an arrangement to have the remains 'exhumed' with the new property owner's agreement.
