I have a 5mo. old puppy female about 40 lbs. She gets sick a lot. She had diarreah for one week, I started to feed her rice and hamburger. That helped . Tonight , I gave her chicken and rice, something different. She threw that up later. Then she threw up some water later after that. She also barfs in the car a lot. What advice do you have for her sensative stomach?

I have had her to the vet about this and they gave her Imodium pills and anti-vomiting pills . They work , but I would like an EXPERT to give advice about food and vitamin supplements that are natural for a 5 mo. old puppy.

I believe that puppy chow (Purina) gives her the runs.

I just want everyone to know , the dog -is in good shape. She still eats well and goes to the bathroom well. She plays well and gets plenty of exercise. She is still a high energy pup . I think she has a sensative stomach. What is EPI?? I do take excellent care of her. I will be taking her back to the vet if this continues. I just thought that I could get some GOOD advice from an EXPERT on "Answers" because the vet isn't cheap! She has diarreah on the Purina puppy food. I am afraid to buy a different kind- how do you know it is better???

It will be vitally important not to change her diet AT ALL once you find one that she can eat. That is the single most important thing to remember. Dogs don't need variety. They do better on a constant diet.
Go to naturapet.com for all you need to know about dog nutrition.
Get her off all store brands of food! They are all but poison to dogs. If you bought it at a Petsmart, Petco, or a grocery store, it's no good. Read a book called: "Foods Pets Die For" by Ann N. Martin. You will be shocked and amazed at what they are putting in pet food. It really is DISGUSTING.
Short trips in the car at first then longer ones will help her to adjust. Also, getting her on a good food and her stomach settled will be key to stopping the vomiting.
Make sure she has plenty of water at all times so she won't dehydrate.

you want an expert, but yet you said you already took her to a vet. perhaps you need to consult another vet. vets ARE experts. i know this sounds gross, but save some of the vomit and take it with you so that way the vet can test it if they need to.

No matter if someone says they are a lab expert, it's the vet who needs to figure out what's wrong. And it doesn't matter what color the lab is either...whether it's yellow, black, or chocolate. Have your vet run tests for stomach disorders, nervous disorders, anything you can think of. Labs do not normally have sensitive stomachs. Have you also tried regular dog food like puppy food? Purina, Iams, and Eukanuba make very good dog foods. It will have the nutrients a growing puppy needs...rice and hamburger and rice and chicken do not have them. Constantly changing her food will also give her the runs.

And dogs eating grass will make them puke, yes. But they also need to have a little bit. If their body didn't want whatever the grass offers, they wouldn't be tempted to eat it. All dogs eat grass. They are not 100% carnivores.

I would get a second opinion from another vet. Your dog shouldn't be on drugs all of the time. Will the dog not eat regular dog food or does it make her sick too? They make science diet (hill's brand) for dogs with sensitive stomachs. Also, FYI, the brown labs are called chocolate labs.

If she is getting that sick, you need to get her to a vet. now. Something is wrong with her, it's not normal for a lab to get sick like that. Have you wormed her? She could be wormy! Also, have you got a flea collar on her? Say one you bought at wal-mart. Flea collars can make them very sick. Please carry her to the vet soon. I carry my black lab if she gets sick. Pay on the bill,by the month. She will love you even more for helping her. Give her some Keopactate. It will help some. Regina

honestly, being an owner of 4 dogs...you need to start feeding you dog a healthy CONSISTENT diet. dogs really need dog food. it has all the nutrients a dog needs.

no more hamburger, no more chicken.
