I am a Respiratory Therapist and the answer is 3 minutes. Brain damage is irreversible no matter how long you are without oxygen. Once brain damage begins you can never regain those cells that have died.

Once oxygen levels begin to drop...Average between 2-5 minutes the brain starts to shut down all primary functions. including circulation...brain damage can occur as soon as 8-10 minutes. Cases have been documented for 30 minutes or longer without breathing and still have no sign of brain damage.

You can only go without oxygen to your brain for 4 minutes before brain damage starts. This the reason that the Heimlich Maneuver was created.

Very roughly 4 to 10 minutes.

Serious brain damage is unlikely in less than 4 minutes (except with those who already have cardio-vascular issues or previous strokes).

Serious brain damage is CERTAIN with oxygen deprivation of 10 minutes. In fact, death is probable.

In between, it depends on the individual, but every second beyond four minutes leads to permanent disability and death.

This depends on every individual. While the average human being can go up to 3 minutes woithout oxygen, medical conditions can mae the brain more prone to the the lack of oxygen.

Also, the answer depends on the size of the brain and the organism's brain you are talking about. I answered this question in relevance to to the human brain.

I've been in the hospital more times than I can count from aplastic anemia, and am now training to become a trauma surgeon. So from my classes as well as my ER internship you have almost exactly 3 minutes (if your healthy alittle less if your not) before damage sets in to your brain. Its also the same amount of time they have to save you once your heart stops.

I have heard 6 minutes is where serious brain damage starts to occur. That doesn't mean brain cells don't start dieing at 6 minutes. They already start dieing beforehand.
