Generally, 5 years is the limit for using a baby product. (Strollers, car seats, cribs) Do you know anything about it? I mean, the person who gave it to you...did they have three kids, all of whom slept in it during their infancies and didn't take good care of it? If that's the case, I'd think seriously about buying a new one.
That being said, my grandmother gave me a crib she bought years and years ago...it's from Lazarus (a nice dept. store in the midwest...similar to Macy's, Saks, etc.) and never used. She purchased it at a discount rate because one of the knobs on the posts was missing. She bought it to have if/when grandchildren came to visit. None of the grandkids came to visit until they were too big for a crib, so it sat, wrapped in its original packaging, in the basement for 20 years. I used it with my second son (he and his older brother are very close together in age, and his brother was still in a crib when he was born). I did buy a new mattress for it, but the crib itself is brand new.

The main safety issue would be the distance between the slats of the crib (i.e., so kid can't get their head through it).
Here's the specs:
The distance between the crib slats must be no more than 2 3/8 inches. And to keep an infant from accidentally falling out, the dropsides must be at least 9 inches above the mattress support when lowered. When raised, the top of the dropside must be at least 26 inches above the support at its lowest position.

The big safety feature you need to be aware of is that the slats cannot be more than 3 inches apart, this is so the baby doesn't get their head stuck in between them. Just make sure everything else is sturdy and well put together. Make sure none of the screws are stripped or easily removed.

The laws changed regarding crib safety in 1992. Yours should be fine.

Unless you plan to go racing with your baby in it, no crib is design for it..
Check the basic structure and harness are still in working condition.. so that they don't give way while you are pushing them.
Use it sensibly and it should be fine.

No, its not too old. I had a crib from 1989 and they were all changing then. It should be safe.

I would either call or even email the company who made it to see if anything was ever recalled on it...
