Personally, since I am a writer. I think a journal would be great, she can write her thoughts and hopes and future plans in it and detail the babies growth, physically and spiritually.
Or chronicle her life on your own and present it to her.
Creativity is the greatest gift, I think. Off subject a little bit, but giving an idea of a creative gift I had given.
I had given, as a proposal to a woman I loved with all my heart, I hand etched a wine glass proposing marriage to her. It was not accepted, and I never truly found out why she didn't.
But, my point, be creative. If it comes from a friend whose heart is true, she will like it, no matter what it is

it sounds "lame" in a glitzy way, but offer your services for after the baby is born. She won't have a good nights sleep for awhile, so volunteer to watch the baby while both parents get some sleep or let the new mom take a relaxing shower with peace of mind that someone is watching the baby.
call the local Y or red cross and ask about a course on infant safety (infant CPR/First aid Cert.) and present a copy to your friend at the shower and tell her about your gift.
It gets great reviews!

Ahh, it's probably what can you take away. The nausea, bloating and all the good stuff that comes with being pregnant. But really, a great book is "What to expect when you're expecting." I purchased this book 1 week after I found out I was pregnant and it really helped. And I even referred back to it with my second pregnancy. If that's not something you'd want to give, you can always give her a jar of pickles and some ice cream! ;0)

I like the previous person's answer - a gift that pampers her. She's going to get tons of stuff for the baby - a little something for her will be appreciated. A gift for a salon visit (let her chose the service that she gets). Or probably any other gift that she might not buy for herself, since she'll be buying for baby in the coming months...new handbag, fun jewelry, slippers, scented candles, whatever. That's nice of you to think of a gift now, rather than just getting the gift for her shower. Good friend. :-)

1) you can give her the best love ans support.
2) take her to the store and let her make a registry and then you will know what she likes and think she will need. (don't get a diaper bag I still have four more left and my baby is almost a year lol)

If shes your best friend, give her a big bear hug and a pat tell her to keep it up!
If you are talking about material things, give her some CD's or Books about care to be taken during pregnancy!
