When a question like "If you had a gay child, would you attend their wedding?"
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AgFnbr_cSHwobFYs05up8nTsy6IX?qid=20060619195433AATOQm1
gets answers that state:

"if i had a gay child.... i dont think he/she wud ever see the day when he is at the age to marry"

" I would never have a gay child. I would set his/her *** straight"

" I wouldn't attend the wedding. i would disown them"

" I would disown my child if I found out he/she were gay"

" Hate the sin, love the sinner is correct, but i wouldnt allow them to go thru with it"

How should i even still respect your religion? These sort of people deserve no respect. it's as simple as that. There is no excuse for opinions like that.

Please give me one reason why i should bring myself to respect a religion that creates opinions like the above stated??

You do not have to respect Christianity, or any other religion, just respect other people and their right to believe how they want. I am not a Christian, however do believe that Jesus set a good example. You will find hypocrites in every religion. It seems that Christians are the only ones that believe they are right and everyone else is wrong, however, actions speak louder than words. Some of the finest people I know (including myself) are not Christian, and try to respect all people. The people that make those statements, pick and choose their own rules. Their are many different versions of Christian religions, even they cannot agree with each other. So do not accept pressure from them, keep questioning your own faiths, and do the right thing!!

Respect the religion. Don't respect the people who use it as an excuse to "justify" their decisions/life/opinions. Seriously, read the 10 commandments & Book of the Law of the Lord - I wouldn't say take all of it to heart, but for the most part, they've got good basic morals in it, just like any other religion. The Golden Rule exists in all 5 major religions: "Do unto others as you would have others do unto you."

For thousands of years in thousands of cultures, religion has been a way to explain the unexplainable. Why does it thunder? Because Thor's pissed off.

Religion becomes something else when people use the religion to instill fear to make the followers/believers bend to the "leader"'s will.

The religion itself does not create the opinions. It is the people. The religion says to love everybody, and anyone who would disown their gay child doesn't understand this, so they are probably not serious Christians. If everyone were to practice Christianity the right way, maybe you'd find reason to respect it.

Don't bind yourself to the religion. The religion was created by people, who (as you've seen above) are fallible and often make mistakes. We are driven by our own ambitions and our own goals.

Instead, bind yourself to the person behind the Religion. Take a look at the Bible with an open mind. Don't read it with the preconceived notions that society gives us. Read it like you would any other book, and you'll find that the Religion that is practised in most places today isn't actually Christianity...

First of all you can not judge an entire religion by a few answers you have received by people who CLAIM to be Christian, but even if they are it is there business how they deal with their families, not for you to say they are right or wrong anyway. I think this world and its teaching it tolerant to all except for Christians, who have a right to their beliefs just as well as any other people. So who are the true hypocrites? You want respect but don't want to give it.

If they would disown their own child, then the children can always come home to me. :-) Auntie Nik has a nice ring to it! :-D Sorry, just feeling very "motherly" lately.

It's the people who distort, contort and "rape" the religion into something it may not be originally. Answerer Southflorida(?) has it right---it's the people who do this, not the religion. Granted, some tenents of christianity I don't agree with and do think it gives "bad advice"......but imho, it's mostly the people who distort things around as they don't understand bible is allegorical, not literal.

I believe everyone should respect other's rights to choose.. regardless of whether it conflicts with their own... personally I would love my child unconditionally. I am a Christian... some people say they are Christian but don't really understand what that means... if you have the love of Christ in you.. you love unconditionally. I am no better than anyone else.. I try not to judge cus I am not in their shoes. Don't decide based on just a few opinions out of millions :)

If the parent is a true Christians they would not disown their child but they would not be very happy and they may feel betrayed. The thought is usually worse than the action. Christ died for the sinner not the righteous.

Whether you agree with them or not you should still respect what other people believe, otherwise you're just as ignorant as you claim them to be. Religion falls under free will and free speech. I don't agree with organized religion either, in fact I find it down right dispicable, but I still am horrified and offended when I hear about people breaking church windows and tagging temples. If you appreciate your free speech and your right to believe what you want you have to grant that freedom to everyone else.

Some of those answers really surprised me. I'm a Christian, and if my child was gay I would do all I could to nurture and be there for them. I can't say I would support the lifestyle, because I wouldn't. However, they would still be my child and I would love them unconditionally. It is ultimately their decision to live life how they choose, not mine.
