My boyfriend just told me he loves me. I don't love him at all and was completely ready to break up with him. What do I say when I am breaking up with him that completely doesn't break his heart? We were amazing friends before he asked me out and don't want to lose his friendship. I don't want to use the old "I just want to be friends" line. Help me please!!!

Stay pretty "matter of factly" or "womanly", but use alot of interest in your voice.

Don't get "gushy", pityful or sympathetic-sounding - like "Awww!" (it doesn't help)

"I understand that you love me. I'm glad you told me that. Thank you.

I cannot honestly say that I love you, and I know you wouldn't want me to lie to you.

Really, I didn't even consider that we were working out so I am a bit surprised that you're in love with me.

Honestly, I just don't have that return feeling and I was actually considering us not staying together."

Expect him to be shocked. Let him talk, and just acknowledge him.

Oh, yea, you're right, avoid "We can still be friends."

Tell him you are flattered but you don't share the same emotions. You can't help but hurt him, but honesty and sooner rather than later is far more kind.

And you're right, don't use the "just be friends" line because someone infatuated will think that's an in to your heart and that time will "bring you around" to the same feelings they have. In other words, trying to be friends right now will just create a lot more pain.

Make a clean break.

I know you don't want to break his heart becasue you do love him on some level. You are not in love with him, but you care for him as a friend. It is going to break his heart, but it is better to do it now before the relationship goes any further. He would be even more upset if down the road he finds out that you stayed with him out of pity. I would tell him the truth. Tell him that you do care for him and you do love him, but you are not in love with him. You want your relationship to be as close friends, but not a boyfriend girlfriend kind of relationship. Tell him you don't want tohurt him, but you think being honest is the best way. Tell him, you hope he can find it in his heart to continue with a friendship relationship with you. I hope things work out!!

There's no easy way to tell him without breaking his heart. If you truly dont love him and dont see yourself loving him. You are doing yourself and him a favor by letting go, because you are wasting your chances of you and him finding true happiness by staying in a realationship that will eventually fail anyways.

You cant avoid breaking his heart, so get it done now. Just tell him your touched by his feelings but that unfortunately you do not share them, and think it might be better for him to look elsewhere for love.
